That's pretty much everyone in the town I grew up in except replace republican with the local flavour of conservatives. I remember (foolishly) asking some friends and acquaintances who they voted for, thinking that we were all pretty aligned in our views (I wasn't quite a commie at that point so I was still in favour of voting for the left wing party in my area) and every single one voted either right wing or far right wing. I tried asking why they would vote against their own interests like that and I got hit with a few variants of "well that's how my parents (meaning father) always voted so I vote that way too" like political allegiance is passed down like eye color.

Then they complain when services are slashed, the family doctors pack up and leave, and the local hospital can't keep staff around.

And yet my family looked at me like I had two heads when I suggested we should take a minute to think about how to react to mass shooting when we visited America. I don't think I was going overboard either, it's not like I made it the constant focus and obsessed about it while we were there, but I don't think it's ridiculous to take a minute or two and have a quick discussion on how to act/react just in case.
