I'm not so sure. I keep thinking about how this war parallels WW1 in many ways, including now countries joining the fighting even after it's been shown how deadly modern combat is. I still don't know why macron would be gung-ho in favour, but I know massive casualties hasn't stopped countries from joining a war before

Hijackings back then were also not the same as what we think of as hijackings. Nowadays our idea of what happens is coloured by 9/11 whereas most of those highjackings before, while unpleasant, weren't deadly for most of the people involved. When the majority of highjackings just lead to the plane being diverted to Cuba it isn't such a big deal, but after the idea of using them as weapons got out people decided it was time to clamp down.
