I think Russia, like China, sees a lot of win-win opportunities in the Caucasus and Middle East - a more stable Eurasia would benefit everyone in the region, and severely impair the ability of the US to throw their weight around even outside the region.
You can see the importance of the region by how hard the US has tried to destabilise it since the 1950s
