American officials’ criticisms of Ukraine’s counteroffensive are often cast through the lens of a generation of military officers who have never experienced a war of this scale and intensity.

So effective his own officers tried to blow him up

I typed out a long reply and accidentally hit cancel lol

In essence

  • both state directed and in capitalist states so no ideology
  • value of long duration is evident with Roscosmos dropping the ball lately
  • we may have different thresholds for giving credit
  • difficult to compare when at different levels of achievement (e.g. SpaceX has not had the opportunity to mangle an ISS module)
  • gap closing with SpaceX's delivery of a moon lander later this year/next year
  • agree on China
  • shame new cold war and capitalism has killed a lot of international cooperation and investment in space science

Wish we had your cyclists, most of the ones in my city are pricks.

Some do the "on your side" yelling as they pass, which strikes me as quite strange because it's a bit late.

I say this as someone who enjoys recreational bicycle riding.

They've never had a crew safety incident.

To be fair, Roscosmos has done what, a hundred crewed missions since the breakup of the USSR. Has SpaceX even made it to ten yet?

I wouldn't be too impressed with the launch statistics either because at least half of them are just dumping starlink satellites into LEO to financially sustain SpaceX.

You can compare that to success rate of the Long March rockets:

Rockets from the Long March family have accumulated a total of 484 launches as of 20 August 2023. Of these, 466 were successful, 10 were failures, and 8 were partial failures. The cumulative success rate is 96.3%.

which from memory covers ~10 rockets with various engines and propellants

Pumped hydro doesn't use that much mater relative to other uses, and you can use evaporation reducing surface cover. For example, the lower reservoir of the Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station holds 66 gigalitres of water, or a third of California's daily water usage.

It's not nearly as vulnerable to drought impacts because the water isn't essentially lost once it's run through the generator like with conventional hydro.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) -- Lightning struck the home of Sen. Joseph Biden, starting a small fire that was contained to the kitchen.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the house, but were able to keep the flames from spreading beyond the kitchen, said Cranston Heights Fire Company Chief George Lamborn.

"Luckily, we got it pretty early,'' he said. "The fire was under control in 20 minutes.''

It's not a great look, particularly when you recall he has other firefighter involved events to reference

President Joe Biden opened up about the death of his first wife and daughter during remarks at an event honouring firefighters on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Summit on Fire Prevention and Control in the South Court Auditorium of the White House, the president spoke movingly and appreciatively about how first responders saved his sons from the car wreck that killed their mother and sister.

China is still using deep ultraviolet (DUV) chip etching which has a resolution of 193 nanometres, whereas the latest technology is extreme ultraviolet (EUV) which has a resolution of 13.5 nanometres. In practice it means they're about four years behind the other chip manufacturers.

An EUV machine costs about $200 million and that's the one banned for export to China.

Shipping the machine requires 40 shipping containers, 20 trucks and three Boeing 747s.

Having the schematics isn't really enough - you also need the production lines and extreme tolerances to reliably build the machines.

Some chips are also export banned so Chinese firms have just been buying cloud time on the chips instead.

Longer term it is expected that China will develop a fully self sufficient semiconductor industry.
