Nearly all of the biggest competitive multiplayer/esports genres of today started as mods.

  • CS (half-life mod) -> Competitive tactical shooters (CS:GO, Valorant)
  • Dota (War3 mod) -> MOBAs (Dota 2, LoL, Smite)
  • Team Fortress (Quake mod) -> Hero Shooters (TF2, Overwatch)
  • DayZ (Arma 2 mod) -> Survival FPS (Rust, Ark)
  • Battle Royal Mods (like Hunger Games for Minecraft or BR for Arma 2) -> Battle Royal (Fortnite, PUBG)

Why?

Multiplayer games require other players! Mods generally come with a 'built-in' playerbase and a very low barrier for entry. The vast majority of innovation in the multiplayer space comes from mods, since trying something new as a commercial title has a huge risk of never establishing a big enough playerbase and just dying out before anyone tries it.

These are such a terrible idea, mostly because of the noise. Imagine a world where these become even halfway popular in any urban environment....

Cars already cause huge noise pollution in cities, which has large-scale effects on health and well-being, but anything using rotors to stay airborne makes cars seem comparatively quiet.

I tend to just stick to a few games rather than jump around a lot.

So I have around 2000-3000 hours each in TF2, Dota 2, and WoW (only classic and pre-Cata)

This actually works really well for me, since it means I don't have to play around with swapping accounts or do any effort to keep things separate.

  • TF2
  • Dota 2

I guess I just like the number 2 (and Valve)

Dota 2! But then again, I've been playing that for nearly a decade at this point....
