Now this is a gif I have not seen in a looong time.

Fairphone - listen up! (I know they're definitely here and I'm not just shouting into the wind.)

Go find a Samsung Galaxy S5. Upgrade the internals, move the button to the side, and you're done. Waterproof, wireless charging, swappable batteries, SD card, headphone jack. It's the last good phone I've used.

No major "supported for 1 generation by the manufacturer then forgotten" hardware gimmicks (if this were a just universe, the guy that suggested the Bixby button would be reassigned to manually unclogging toilets with his hands), no notch (oh Apple, you think we didn't look at the 'functional notch' and start betting on how long before that's gone?), a satin feeling back and shiny bevel made of plastic (it flexes, doesn't bend, and who gives a shit when it's in a case), thin but not so much so that you have to worry about sanding 0.00001 mm off the battery to fit it (0.5mm thicker and 4 more hours of screen on time? Puhlease. My college laptop weight 10 pounds and I took it everywhere. Load up those energon cubes).

You wanna play around with the dimensions and cameras and add a retractable feline flossing utensil? Fine. The phone everyone wants already 99% exists. It's maddening!

I JUST started using SearXNG and have been also googling the same terms to see how they compare.

So far (less than a week), SearXNG has had what i was looking for in the first 5 links every time. Googled result was either below the scroll or I gave up. Maybe only a couple dozen tests, but it wasn't even close.

You dare question the majesty of AltaVista?

[–] DrNeurohax@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right. I think before that was metasearch.com. It was basically a top frame that you entered the search in with a row of icons, and the bottom frame would render the search results from whichever sites you chose. I'm pretty sure it removed all the extra elements, too, so it was actually pretty decent.

Which is why you need at least 1 account recovery email that isn't yours, and that person should have your password/2FA key saved somewhere secure.

As for dead relatives, I've had a couple and I exported all their data, deleted everything from the account, and I check them around once per year. I figure 5 years is enough, but by 10, there isn't really any reason to keep it going.

I liked it for a day or two, but then it started interrupting the material I wanted to read. Nothing adversarial, just a practicality problem. So, now I block those magazines with a hardy salute and, "Best of luck, you crazy kids!"

I hope things are going well for them, but there's nothing I can add to a picture of some person I don't recognize, on a mystery topic I can't read, in response to comments I can't read.

I use that exact metaphor. I picture ernest hammering the final board for the days work. He hoists the hammer onto his shoulder, wipes his brow, and see a sea of people running at him from a block away. A bunch are carrying signs that say, "We can't wait to live in ernest's palace," while others say, "We're good with just a roof. No big hurry. We'll make it work."

And YOUR exuberance has inspired me to commit to upping my post game. I was never a big poster on Reddit, but mostly because I just didn't want to deal with the contrarian and amateur professionals fallout. It might be best to focus on the niche communities, since that's where the real valuable stuff exists on Reddit.

Good luck out there!

What you've done here is truly impressive. Reach out to the community when you need help and stay healthy. It's clear you know what you're doing and thanks for all the hard work!

Ironic, since lemmings don't actually jump off cliffs. The people making the documentary (Disney) that's famous from actually threw them over the cliff to make it interesting.
