Man, as an outsider, I thought all newsgroups began with alt.*

I think that would self-correct when such a thing would be implemented. They'd just get more specific names, like solarpunktech or such. It would be an issue for existing communities like that though.

As far as I'm aware, anyone with a strong code of ethics can be lawful, even if that code does not match the law of the land you're on. Being good is a no-brainer, to the extent that any adventurer could be "good" (it's bloody work, after all). Besides all that, it could be a scout of some kind.

While FMHY isn't an art-focused instance, I've had a pleasant interaction with one of its admins before, so I poked them (Kaizen) about this.

For any community, you can easily go to its page on its own instance by clicking the gray link right under the community name. For this community, it looks like "!main@sh.itjust.works". From there, you can click the instance name on the top left to go to its home page. On the right sidebar, it'll show the instance rules, and below that is a list of admins. You could just pick one from there to send a message to, about this.

Alternatively, you could post about this on the "main" communities of various instances. They don't necessarily have the same name but they're usually not hard to find.

Yeah, it is. People forget sometimes, but the instances that allow NSFW are usually pretty strict on having all NSFW stuff be tagged, for federation's sake.

Have you contacted any instance admins about this yet?

There is, of course, a difference between a post that's pure ad, and a post that's art that contains a Patreon link. One provides nothing to the viewer, the other is a normal post with a little self-promotion added.

It's good to err on the side of caution in this, but the admins should really add a note about self-promotion to any rule about ads, to clarify this.

I'm not from your instance, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I specifically looked for an instance that could access all the communities I want to take part in. You probably have users like that on your instance too, who would be sad or would even move to another instance if this were done after they joined.

In your settings, you can choose not to see any NSFW content. Similarly, when you're not logged in on an instance, any NSFW content is hidden by default. While registering, it asks whether you want to see that, so I think you must've picked yes.

The main reason to defederate from instances with NSFW communities, as far as I'm aware, is that your instance will cache anything one of its users views from another instance. If that thing includes stuff that's illegal in the instance's jurisdiction, that's a problem... Lemmy doesn't even cache images, just the text, but that would contain a link to whatever content's in the original post.

Yeah, it's sad. I guess it makes sense; just now I saw two posts from "lewd loli" from another instance in my "all" feed, and I imagine that'd be awkward if it happened to lemmy.ml. It does mean I'll need a separate NSFW and SFW account, of which one will probably just be ignored completely. Or I could spin up my own instance, so small nobody will bother to block it.

That's a fun way to call all the moderators tools :D

One of those is mine, after finding out that LemmyNSFW can't reach lemmy.ml, but FMHY can reach both. Probably not the only one.
