You need to get a federal permit (costs ~$300 per permit) for each of those features.

Don't want to set here and repeat TexasDrunk, but yeah, that's largely what i do.
Though my solution for most cards is to buy a candy bar with each card towards the end of June every year (I have a handful of niblings who were all born end of June through July, so makes a good little treat for when I come to visit)
So other commenters have opinions that I think are rational, but the part that I think is key that they're missing: Tenant Unions.
I have some (in my opinion) tyrannical yet lazy land lords/property managers at my current apt, and have attempted to form a tenant union. Apparently no one agrees with my level of disgust at our treatment, so I've kind of wiffed at the effort.
Which is to say that it takes real work, but it can be done and there are resources for you, but that's the first step: don't go alone.
As someone who spent time in the military, I know exactly what you mean.
I wish the people I worked with were 25% as competent, rational, and level headed as the crew of the Enterprise.

The trick is to not use them though, which so many seem to struggle with. If you're someone who struggles to manage debt, then getting more credit cards WILL BE DISASTEROUS.

So that solves the problem of them reading your files, but it doesn't solve the metadata collection portion.
They will still have your location, details of your device, geo location data, probably IP space, not to mention the ability to do pattern of life analysis on you as you modify and move files.
Protecting the contents of your files seems like a logical first step, but that's not the only step.
