From the first article you linked:

Under the Jones Act, any vessel can enter Puerto Rico. In fact, many foreign vessels enter Puerto Rico regularly, importing goods from countries around the world. However, transportation of goods between two U.S. ports must be carried out by a vessel that was built in the U.S. and operated primarily by Americans. This law doesn't single out Puerto Rico -- it applies to all U.S. ports, the only exception being the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the Jones Act as much as any rational American would, but from what I hear, they get a grab bag of exemptions on taxes when moving goods to/from South America (I suppose via non-US ships and via aircraft).

I don't have the time for proper research at the moment to try to find what my dudes have talked about when it comes to laxer import/export controls, but may revisit later today if I get some down time.

I don't spend a lot of time with Puerto Ricans, but the two I keep in semi-regular contact with have said that they don't want Puerto Rico to become a state (they wave vaguely at the rules for imports/exports to South American countries; apparently the island has relaxed rules on that compared to states?).

What's actually stopped them from.becoming a state in the past? Seems like ~2013 was the last time a movement for that had any real traction?

Yeah, what's with boomers and the need to add an emoji at the end if each message?

Makes sense, but couple clarifying questions:

By "ending careers for working with Obama", you mean the people mostly left over from Bill Clinton's time as president were threatening people within the Democratic party to not work with Obama?

Obama, rightfully pissed off made a stupid decision and allowed the neoliberals to hang onto the DNC.

Wait so, he was so mad at them that he.....let them keep power? That doesn't make sense. Can you shed any light on why he'd do that?

Man, that Victory Fund sounds corrupt as hell. Thanks for explaining things I was too immature/politically ignorant to pay attention to back in the day.

if you didn't play ball they bankrupted your entire state and let Republicans take it to punish you and set an example to get there states.

I don't think I follow the logic on this, most probably because I'm not sure which funds / fund pools you're referring to.

Could you explain what you mean a bit more ELI5 level?

I don't want to dismiss this as of no concern, but this article has no numbers nor rigorous attempts to measure the reading ability of students. Its just a few professors - probably (but not necessarily) representative of a large body of professors - complaining about their students not doing their assigned reading.

I'm not sure how many I speak for on this, but this feels like this article could have been written about my college cohort (mid to late millennial). I know I barely did the reading for my gen ed courses cause I didn't care about "History of the Near East" or "Mythology of New World Cultures". I remember saying to myself "I'm here to learn math and engineering, not stories old folks told around a camp fire a millennium ago". I'm not saying that's right (in fact I now believe quite the opposite) but I would have been one of these "illiterate kids" had I been sampled in my first year of college (despite having been an avid reader my whole life).

My guess would have been either Vesputia or just Vespia.

That latter ones sounds like a cool name for a dystopian retelling/alternate of the history of the New World.

Maybe the real rations were the enemies we made along the way

So I've got 6:

  • Nine inch nails
  • Alice in Chains
  • Matchbox 20
  • Radiohead
  • Smashing Pumpkins
  • Sound Garden

Unclear what the hole, the screaming trees, and the (jelly?) sandwich are, but I bet those are the other 3 I'm missing.

I actually prefer to microdit.

Wife gave me a heads up that she expects we'll get a Roomba from her parents for Christmas - most likely a Roomba Max 505 or 705 (or the Costco variations on those).

Looking at the Roomba Integrations page for HA, I saw this line:

It currently does NOT work with the newer x05 Wi-Fi models, such as Roomba 105, 405, and 505

I was wondering if anyone had tinkered with any of those candidate models and had any success getting them to work with HA?

Hey Devs,

So I'm getting really sick of the XKCD Dependency derived memes being posted on !programmer_humor@programming.dev and other similar communities.

I still like the communities and don't want to leave them....I just want to not hear from then till this far has passed. It sure would be handy if I could block them from showing up in my feeds for 5-10 days.

Either way, appreciate your consideration!

Edit: accidentally linked wrong community.

For context, I've dabbled in home brewing. I've made ~4 successful batches based on online recipes. I wouldn't call myself an expert, but also not a complete amateur.

So what happens if you don't rack your mead/wine? I suppose the notion I have is to let it set in primary (assuming there's no fruit/spices to remove after initial fermentation) until its fully clarified before going straight to bottling?

I guess I've assumed there is some problem in the clarification step if you don't "get rid of" the dead yeast that precipitates, but I've never seen anything exploring that as a method.

Can anyone offer their experience?

Just got set up with latest update and am having issues with up swipes when scrolling (e.g. on webpages), when up swiping to access open apps/full app listing, and when trying to "back" swipe (i.e. trying to back out of a menu.

To be more descriptive, if I stop scrolling with up swipes, usually the next up swipe won't work and I'll need to do it twice to have it register the gesture.

For opening my list of apps and the full app listing (swiping from very bottom) I usually have to try about 5 times for it to register the gesture. Same for back swiping.

I use the standard Grapheme launcher and haven't installed any new apps since the update. Issue started this morning after the reboot for OS upgrade. I do have a screen protector, but I'm not seeing any issues with any tapping gestures, so I doubt that's the cause.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know any fixes?

So recently had a hankering for some Pokémon hacks so booted up my old Pokémon Storm Silver ROM (using retroarch with Desmume as emulator).

I spun up a new game and played a bit, but it wouldn't let me save a new game since the ROM had my old save data. I decided to just save the game state with the built in retro arch save state functionality. So beat the champion using save states as alternative save feature with 60 hours on game clock (probably MUCH less due to my abuse of ffw feature).

But when you beat the champion, it dumps you back to the title screen. From there, I can only load my old data (since my current play isn't properly saved in the game data). As such, I can't play any of the post elite four content.

Anyone aware of a workaround where I can erase the games data from a save state? Kinda feels like I'm just SOL.

If I am, let this stand as a warning to other Pokémon fans. Always take the time to clear your old data!

Just recently took the leap to Graphene OS from stock android.

One problem I'm having is getting my apps and keeping them updated. Obviously I've been trying to use F-Droid, Accrescent, and the Grapheme provided app store where I can, but work and friends require me to have apps not available there.

I've been using Aurora Store for everything else, but it seems really buggy (tons of instances where apps won't update, will need ~3 tries to properly install, will notify me there was an error when the app clearly installed, etc). Additionally, I saw somewhere that Aurora store has some privacy/security issues (but didn't dive deeper to see what was meant by that).

I've read Obtanium is another option, but it looks like that still will not meet all my needs.

I suppose I should also say that I'm hesitant to use the Play Store / Play Services at all. I get there's sandboxing around them that makes them less invasive, but I don't full grasp how Graphene accomplishes that / what specifically it prevents.

What are you guys using for your App Stores? Should I just put aside my concerns and trust the sandboxed Play Store?

Appreciate your attention and consideration on this!

I'm a tech interested guy. I've touched SQL once or twice, but wasn't able to really make sense of it. That combined with not having a practical use leaves SQL as largely a black box in my mind (though I am somewhat familiar with technical concepts in databasing).

With that, I keep seeing [pic related] as proof that Elon Musk doesn't understand SQL.

Can someone give me a technical explanation for how one would come to that conclusion? I'd love if you could pass technical documentation for that.

I've heard Reddit is setting themselves up for another major fumble and that it relates to how much Spez is a fanboy of Elon Musk.

I can't find any details on the drama playing out though. Can someone explain the details of what's going on?

I would love to see Lemmy grow with another big "Rexxit" event, but I'm not seeing anything happening to cause one.
