idk that monster counts as a deep cut, it's definitely the urasawa i see people talk about the most. it's obviously very good though

higurashi is in large part about how japan hasn't properly reckoned with all the war crimes from ww2, especially unit 731

getter robo isn't actually nagai! ken ishikawa did the whole thing, nagai contributed a few notes (like it was his idea to make the getter combine from planes, ishikawa was going to do cars) and i think did a one shot or two. and you gotta read go shin and arc! that's where it goes from good classic super robot to all time great

akira has both the dark horse translation AND the very fun og marvel translation from the 80s. the marvel one is a pretty good translation, especially for the time, and it's delightful seeing the way they colored it. they put a lot of care into it, otomo redrew a bunch of it so it would work better when flipped for the american release, and it was the first comic ever to use digital coloring. it's gorgeous

hellsing rules.

my #1 manga you need to check out but there's a decent chance you might not have is getter robo (GAN GAN GAN GAN) which is fantastic. all time coolest robot story. sadly never gotten a good anime that got through all the important bits. getter robo go has a weak stretch in the middle when they're fucking around in alaska but otherwise is a constantly escalating mecha extravaganza that gurren lagann was furiously copying the design notes of without paying any attention to the thematic stuff (more on that here). it's one of the best manga of all time, if you haven't read it you need to

the getter reading order is getter robo -> getter robo g -> getter robo go -> shin getter robo -> getter robo arc. make sure you read the getter saga version which has a few added chapters not found in the original release. everything post alaska arc in go is 10/10 all time greatest material. insanely cool mech fights, cosmic horror, the tragedy of knowing what you're doing is a mistake but feeling like you have no other option. ken ishikawa the goat

also gonna give a shoutout to the akira manga, which is way more fleshed out and interesting in its worldbuilding than the movie. really cool, worth checking out regardless of whether you think the movie is the best thing ever or aren't too hot on it

you gotta read the whole getter robo saga

it was basically always ishikawa's thing, i think go nagai just came up with the idea of making the getter be 3 combining airplanes

i saw the tv glow is anti woke because it ends with

spoilerthe trans main character repressing, forever trapped in the cishetnormative world of the suburbs

which is like the least woke thing that could happen

[–] Cromalin@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

oh no it wasn't a "dang, i'm still cis" it was him going "i think i don't really get the movie on account of being cis"

[–] Cromalin@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago (4 children)

nah i believe him. he's weirdly cis. like he near exclusively hangs out with trans people but also doesn't have any gender going on that i can tell. just a really chill guy

now it's possible that in 2 years this will be a very funny thing to have said, but i've known him for a while and he just keeps being the one cis guy around

i have no patience for people talking about violent rhetoric on the left really because every day i read the news and every politician in this country and in most others is saying 'we gotta kill more people'. they use different words to say it. obviously you're not supposed to just say 'we gotta kill more people'. but there's all kinds of polite and okay ways to say it.

'we need to control our borders' is a phrase which here means 'we gotta kill more people, we gotta drown more refugees in boats, we gotta send more people back to warzones and governments that want them dead, we gotta make more camps and we gotta make the camps more fatal'.

'we need to be tougher on welfare fraud' is a phrase which here means 'we gotta kill more people, we gotta make disabled people do more song and dance routines to convince some indifferent bureaucrat that they deserve to eat and we gotta make sure that the bureaucrats say 'no', we gotta starve those kids more, we gotta make sure families and kids and old people are freezing in the winter'.

'we need to tackle violent crime' is a phrase which here means 'we gotta kill more people, specifically Black people, unless we said Terrorism instead of Crime, in which case it's specifically muslims, shoot them, imprison them, surveil them, disappear them, brutalize them, whatever.'

and of course none of this is Violent Speech. this is Sensible Political Discourse. these are Common-Sense Policy Goals. we gotta kill more people: that's an electable policy. you can always count on we gotta kill more people as a platform. we gotta kill more people is gonna sweep the nation baby. we gotta kill more people 2024 -- vote now on your phones. now slow down. hold your horses. did that guy just say we gotta kill more people? well that just wont do. thats why im running on a platform of we gotta kill more people for cheaper, to stop this wasteful madness. and the people just keep dying but seems like there's still some of them left so i guess we're just circling back around to our main thing which is: we gotta kill more people

thankfully the vibes are good, and i'm a sucker for seeing a thriller where the cops are arguing with the suits and have to go on a boat ride in the fog, because in the monologue-y bits i just kept going "uhuh, yep. that's true. yep, that's true. peace in the imperial core IS propped up by violence elsewhere that will inevitably blow back on the core somehow. the fall of the soviet union DID leave the imperial core thinking it was the end of history when that was obviously bullshit. i KNOW japan is a client state of america and i have a good idea of the jsdf's complex role there where it's a "self defense force" but is still effectively a major military and contributes to global hegemony. yep. uhuh. going to say anything new to me before before we get back to the plot? are you going to do anything involving the characters or themes or tone of the show/movie patlabor? no?"

still good, though the first one was way better. imagine if a patlabor movie that included noa izumi, main character of patlabor, as a character! that'd be so crazy

say it back

guess i won't be seeing this, even just to laugh at how dumb it is

a: if the rights holders had wanted to they 100% had grounds to sue, and they would have probably won

b: the getter emperor is so cool! and someone should have told the people at gainax "if you're going to do getter emperor, the manifestation of colonialism and genocide as the natural extremes of directionless shonen hotblooded spirit and humanities endless potential for evolution, you need a stronger argument than "nuh uh" when saying 'actually this is a good thing. it's good to forever grow and become more powerful and kill everything in your way'"

if i ever rewatch it i'm not going to be able to see team gurren as anything other than evil. seeing kittan's sacrifice and shaking my head like "he succumbed to the corruption of the getter. sad!"

or maybe i'm wrong and it has a satisfying response that goes beyond "actually i'd just be chill about this whole thing," but i really don't remember that
