Happened to the ranger in my last campaign. He had to do multiple sessions with like 12 max hp. A boss cast fireball at him and our wizard was barely able to counterspell it. We rolled the damage for fun to see what it would have done and it was enough to kill him outright even if he made the save michael-laugh
