Palestinian women and girls have reportedly been arbitrarily executed in Gaza, often together with family members, including their children, according to information received. “We are shocked by reports of the deliberate targeting and extrajudicial killing of Palestinian women and children in places where they sought refuge, or while fleeing. Some of them were reportedly holding white pieces of cloth when they were killed by the Israeli army or affiliated forces,” the experts said.

Edward Said wrote this open letter in 1989, but decided it would be too incendiary to publish. It is appearing here in print for the first time, with introductions by Nubar Hovsepian and Peter Beinart.

Two years after an attacker shot five volunteers before a Black Lives Matter march in Portland, Oregon, killing a 60-year-old woman and leaving one of her young friends paralyzed, a new visual investigation of the attack reveals that the assailant tried to provoke a stand-your-ground situation, daring three women to fight him, before suddenly opening fire when they refused.

According to the results of a new research study carried out by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), prescribing medical-grade opioids significantly reduced the numbers of both deaths and overdoses for B.C. residents.

Specifically, the study, published in the British Medical Journal, showed that individuals who were at risk of death related to illicit opioid use were 61% less likely to die from any cause in the following week if prescribed at least one day’s supply of a pharmaceutical alternative. Moreover, this study is also the first to examine the safer supply harms reduction strategy at a population level. It examined anonymized data from 5,882 participants diagnosed with either opioid or stimulant use disorder and who had filled a prescription for pharmaceutical-grade opioids as part of B.C.’s safer supply program between March 2020 and August 2021.

It was also found that the protective effect of the safer supply increased with the number of days opioid medications were accessed. Furthermore, individuals who received four or more days of prescription opioids were 9% less likely to die from any cause, and 89% less likely to die from overdose in the following week.

The massacre of Palestinians in Gaza is escalating as the misnamed Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continue their carnage, flattening whole neighborhoods and committing mass murder of civilians. Yemen and Southern Lebanon have now been drawn into the war. More than 35,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, have been killed and 67,000 seriously injured according to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor

"The Gaza Strip is poised to witness an explosion in preventable child deaths which would compound the already unbearable level of child deaths in Gaza," said Ted Chaiban, deputy head of humanitarian action at the UN children's agency UNICEF.

At least 90 percent of children under five in Gaza are affected by one or more infectious diseases, according to a joint assessment by the UN agencies for children, food and health.

Seventy percent had had diarrhoea in the two weeks prior to the assessment, marking a 23-fold increase compared to the 2022 baseline.

"Hunger and disease are a deadly combination," World Health Organization emergencies director Mike Ryan said in a statement.

"Hungry, weakened and deeply traumatised children are more likely to get sick, and children who are sick, especially with diarrhoea, cannot absorb nutrients well," he said.

"It's dangerous, and tragic, and happening before our eyes."
