The last apartment I had, the landlord at some point had put very rough outdoor quartz tiles in the kitchen. They were porous and had crevices everywhere so were impossible to keep clean. Our routine became vacuuming for regular cleaning, mopping any sticky spots when needed, and getting on our hands and knees once a year to scrub the tile with soap and brushes. It was the only way to actually clean the tile and the tile would change colors every time we did it. Did I mention that this tile has been installed over 3 more layers of flooring? Classic landlord special apartment.

I used to be in the B2B tech industry and even though I liked what I did within my team for a living, it always felt like I wasn't contributing anything of substance to society. Then everyone in the tech industry was laid off so I nabbed a job in the healthcare industry. I knew going in that I might be contributing negatively to society, but I was desperate and beggars can't be choosers. I was hoping the layoffs would have blown over by now and I'd be able to start looking again, but the layoffs are STILL happening. And now that the whole UHC situation has happened, I feel like I'm walking on eggshells all the time. I still like my team and the things I do within that team, but I loath my company and will jump ship the second I'm able. It's really a shame too as I feel I've done all my best work so far at this company and have grown a lot in just 2 years. But I can't stomach contributing to evil for longer than I have to.

Do not, my friends, become addicted to air. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence!

So is the term "grounded" and I genuinely wonder what parents used to say to their misbehaved children before airplane terminology was commonplace.

I remember watching that series and thinking how crazy it is that maybe 3 events in toy history massively affected everything else to come for all toys. You watched those 3 episodes and all the others after that included something about how they were related to the other 3. Except for Hello Kitty. That was like its own special episode all to itself.

This is what I hate about my company's hybrid RTO policy. There aren't enough seats for everyone and it's not full RTO so we have to schedule our desks ahead of time. Aside from the typical back to office complaints, here are all the reasons I've found that hot seats suck:

  • You have to bring all your shit and pack it all up again before you leave including keyboard, mouse, my foot rest because I'm short, etc.

  • You have to readjust the desk, chair, and monitor every time you come in.

  • Because of the previous, the monitor is loaded with grubby fingerprints.

  • Not all desks are the same. Some are in better locations, some have 1 monitor and some have 2, some are longer, some are more adjustable, etc, etc and people fight for the best desks.

  • There aren't enough meeting rooms and call booths for everyone and people will often just take a room for extended lengths of time or just take a room you signed up for.

  • They make the argument that we need to make connections in person, but my team is in another part of the country and every time I come in, I'm sitting by new people which prevents me from making relationships with people I would otherwise sit nearby on a regular basis thus defeating the purpose.

I feel you. I weirdly did have vegetables and things growing up, but my mom self admittedly hates cooking. So most of what we ate consisted of casseroles made up of things dumped out of a can and any veggies likely also came from a can and we're heated up on the stove. She also over cooked all the meat to make sure people wouldn't get sick. So all the veggies were bland and mushy and all the meat was dry as fuck. I'll never forget the first time I ate fresh pineapple at my inlaws house and it was one of the best things I ever tasted. I'm pretty good at cooking now and I've managed to help my mom improve in all ways as well. She now uses a meat thermometer that I got her for Christmas. I cooked her some fresh broccoli in a pan with salt, pepper, and garlic powder and she loved it and started making hers that way instead of boiling it. Baby steps, but we're making progress.

They are. They're called "conferences" and they're typically of a bullshit subject matter your company is interested in enough to send you to.

For me, someone who uses a Mac for work but still has to use the office environment, it goes something like this:

Google the issue

Google the issue + office for Mac

Find a forum about the exact issue I'm having

Loads of people commenting having the same issue

Expert answers and says "That feature is not available for Macs at this time. How about you post it as a suggestion for the devs at this link here>>>"

Post is minimum 3 years old and there's still no solution.

Gee thanks.

Have you never gone somewhere a bit remote where you can't just buy everything you need? Have you ever gone on a trip that required special clothing like a nice suit or dress? Do you not have kids? Do you not have medical equipment? Etc... These are all legitimate reasons to need more items than a personal bag can hold. While it's certainly possible for some circumstances to only bring a wallet, it simply doesn't apply to most travel situations. Try to put yourself in the shoes of others every now and then.
