Should be thinking about Scotland instead!
not having a CS degree will not hinder your entry into the software industry
I disagree. I think what OP did with their degree was very foolish. A computer science degree would definitely have increased their potential income more than the mathematics degree. Sure, you can still get work as a programmer without a CS degree, but it’s harder.
It’s a shame that when you were reimplementing basic algorithms that you were doing it in JavaScript rather than another language like Java or C# - a missed opportunity to get an early understanding of stack/heap and reference/value, a very important concept.
Also, obligatory “crypto is a scam” comment.
Power corrupts. I’d say probably 95% of people who consider themselves altruistic, if you gave them significant power, would end up abusing it before too long.
I have awful impulse control (severe ADHD) but usually I just eat an entire packet of Oreos instead of exploiting people for selfish reasons.
The NCBI study actually supports my claim - the outdoor areas show NO particulate matter - thats what’s actually harmful to your health.
Stop putting words in my mouth. I wasn’t giving examples of things that should be allowed or banned. I was giving examples of things which we tolerate in society - including kids being noisy while playing. I wasn’t writing a proposal for a new law, you’re holding my friendly, conversational, informal comment to a ridiculous standard.
I absolutely think there’s a case to be made for restricting smoking in places where it does harm. But I once again remind you, the comment I was replying to, was saying that tobacco should be banned outright because the OP didn’t like the smell. That was what I wrote my response to. The “health effects” stuff was post-hoc justification for their bigotry. I’m not interested in arguing the toss with you, I’ve shared my opinion, if you don’t like it, I don’t give a shit.
We lose people we care about all the time during life and most of the time we don’t want our lives to end because we lost our friends, family or even lovers. If anything, it gets easier to accept loss as you get older. There’s no reason to think that trend would reverse.
A “valid excuse” for what? You might have a good point in this comment, but it’s very clear that you’re not making it in good faith.
Rape is one of the least successfully prosecuted crimes. Maybe internet commenters would say that, but that’s meaningless - meanwhile, rapists get away with it 98% of the time, but yeah, clearly we’re being too tough on men. 🙄
It’s not even slightly gay to use a suppository either, it reminds me of the guys who think it’s gay to clean their ass because it’s gay to touch an asshole.
It’s nothing to do with “me”, it’s more to do with reality. There are plenty of studies which show that a lack of sleep leads to significant health issues. Likewise, yes, air pollution also does. But we’re not talking about coal power plants here, we’re talking about people smoking cigarettes. There’s tons of evidence which shows that they are essentially harmless to others if smoked outdoors. That’s why preventing people from getting sleep matters, but smoking outdoors does not.
I’m not going to engage with the other thing you wrote, except to say that OP said that smoking should be banned with no additional qualifiers, in my view, everything else they wrote was explaining why they felt that way. I’m not going to argue that point though, because it’s not relevant.
Once, I was pouring a can of petrol (gas, if you’re American) onto a fire, which spread up the stream of petrol into the petrol tank. I panicked, and my genius solution of how to extinguish it was to shake it around, kinda like how you might do to put out a match.
I poured burning petrol all over the ground and on my clothes, there was fire everywhere all around me. Luckily I was right next to the hosepipe, which I quickly turned on and doused everything in water before it got too out of hand.
Everything was fine, but it could have been a lot worse.
Edit: Don’t play with petrol/gasoline. Fire spreads through it way faster than you could ever imagine, it’s not like in the movies where it moves slow enough that you can stop it, it’s pretty much instant!
I’ve read this comment five times and I still don’t understand what you were trying to say.
Nope! I’m Scottish, only someone really sensitive would be upset by that, people call kilts skirts all the time so it’s a little bit overused as a joke but not offensive, just a little boring maybe :p
