I'm gonna start by saying that I absolutely hate the people responsible for systems like this.

With that said, can we please not bring back Gamergate terminology? Call the Australian lady a TERF or an asshole or whatever, but seeing the word "feminazi" makes me feel like I'm on reddit back in 2016.

I mean, Secure Boot does actually help defend against evil maid attacks if paired with FDE. Someone can't just fuck with your /boot (CVE-2016-4484 nonwithstanding) to do naughty things with your system if you have Secure Boot enabled. Does that fit with most people's threat model? I dunno, probably not. It does actually do something useful though.

My work computer has it enabled and I feel better for it. The issue described in the article is easily dealt with if you just keep up with your firmware updates using fwupd.

B-b-but TempleOS isn't Linux!

I fucking hate this guy. I hate his stupid face and his stupid mouth that he uses to excrete such stupid bullshit. I hate that the people living in a state filled with such beautiful sights chose to elect someone who is so hateful and ugly inside. I fucking hope that we don't reelect him in 2028 but I am not optimistic.

Wait what, they made a TV show of these books? Crazy. If you want more, several of the audiobooks are narrated by Steven Pacey and are reaaaaally good.

Yeah, this sounds like a miserable job for a boring bar. It could be done, but you'd have to keep your cuts really light to deal with the deflection. Plus, you'd need one hell of a carbide boring bar here. You'd have to drill it out somewhat bigger even though it's off center...

Honestly, maybe flipping the part and working at it with a boring bar from that side is called for. Dunno how much extra material there is, but it might be doable.

If you liked the first book, you're going to absolutely LOVE the second one. It's so much better. I've been reading sci-fi for 25 years now and nothing has topped The Player of Games for me.

Honestly, I tell people to pass on Consider Phlebas a lot of the time. The first book is worth reading, but The Player of Games is a much better book and is a better introduction to the series.

Yeah, Stephen Baxter is somewhat sus. I liked his collaboration with Arthur C. Clarke, and I really liked reading his books when I was a kid who couldn't really understand the politics. He has some really interesting concepts (Manifold: Time fucking BLEW MY MIND when I was like 12), but yeah, he has some very libertarian politics that lead to some, uh, interesting plot points.

Seconding these, The Player of Games is my favorite book and I love to see it called out.

I bricked an Asus laptop 15 years ago because their instructions on performing a BIOS update didn't include anything about what filesystem to use on the flash drive with the update file. I used NTFS (which was obviously a mistake in retrospect) and completely bricked the machine.

I tried calling their support line 30 times and never once got to talk to a human. I eventually just gave up on that laptop and replaced it with a Mac. I've been intensely sceptical of Asus products ever since then.

Tbf, uranium is intensely toxic even if it's not very radioactive. Shit's like turbo lead, it's a crazy heavy metal.
