You're absolutely right, but the average person does not think like you. Most people don't ever think about stuff like this.

And so you currently have a very "high-level", rational view of technology, that makes it amazing specifically for you.

However, you either disregard or lack contact with people that are (vastly) different. When looking at a technology in relation to the world, like you want to know about in this topic, you have to view the effects on those different people from you as well. And what other people in this thread said is simply observable and happening. A very small percentage uses the internet/technology like you do. The overall effect on the population is not solely amazing.

This "directly" distinction you're making is not very relevant.

Usually "direct" would mean that without it, it wouldn't have happened. Yes, whatever broke the glasses would've happened without the glasses as well, but it likely wouldn't have resulted in a scratched cornea. So yes, the scratched cornea is a direct effect of having worn glasses.

You're saying they're looking for an excuse to shut down? Yeah honestly that's what I figured, locking comments doesn't make any sense otherwise.

After the call for admins, there was never an indication that the search wasn't going well. Honestly, I would've put some time in (& I'm sure many others would've) if we'd known closure was imminent.

Exactly the same, just that I don't use a screen protector either.

This thing has been dropped so much that I think it's just undestroyable, the new Nokia 3310

It's not the absolute truth. But it's most likely the largest part of the explanation.

People like putting blame on "society", and while societal pressures surely play a part, the reason it's so nice to mainly blame society is because it creates a problem that has an acceptable solution.

Because what do you say when you say society is mainly to blame here? You're saying it's completely fine for many men not to have sex. Just have to fix society making it hard for them to live without sex. If my assumption is correct though, that doesn't help those men very much. But who does it help? Anyone those men would want to have sex with, because they're not under "threat" anymore.

Also I don’t think it’s worth the effort to teach my parents yet another messaging app, like signal.

My friend, just set up Signal on their phones, put it in place of the Telegram app and watch them not even notice anything changed.

It's not though. I'm not working backwards. I'm just not writing a dissertation. It's possible to observe lack of sex leading to psychological pain in all the different societies throughout all of history we have as humans. It's incredibly more likely to be caused by our biology than by artificially created societal expectations.

Dunno what to tell you, but your second sentence is just wrong. It is mainly "men mad because monke brain want sex".

You only think it's not because like you said, you can't relate to most people since you're asexual.

The JIT compiler of Java does the optimization you're talking about. So that advantage of C++ is not really there.

You can compile C++ for all architectures you want as well. The reason you don't normally use Java for clients is that the garbage collector runs at undefined times, causing stuttering. This has been rectified through new algorithms though, so the real reason why you don't wanna use Java is because it simply doesn't have the best tooling and libraries that C++ has, no Unreal engine and no Godot.

It's literally the most natural thing in the world to equate reproductive effectiveness to worth. All life is "worth" their reproductive effectiveness. So not having sex is very relevant to our entire existence as a species.

As such, our mental faculties put a heavy punishment in the form of mental pain, i.e. "self-worth attached to getting laid", on this whole thing.

This has very little to do with societal expectations. It's simple biology. Not getting laid is supposed to be one of the worst things for an organism.

You're rationally right with what you say, but it's simply not very relevant. Rationality does not help with our most deeply rooted biological desires. The only thing that helps is getting them fulfilled, i.e. having sex.

Why the fuck would you go for Backend in C++ and frontend in Java 🤣 just the wrong way around

Yeah, of course not all symbols will fit, but wouldn't it be better to minimize the context switching? Numbers for example are used very often, I really don't see why I have to go to a different page to be able to type them.

Corollary, is it possible to easily create a custom layout for personal use? Or do you have to check out the code and build yourself etc?

I let people rate how much they like different things on a scale of 1-10. How do I actually tell if people like one thing more than another thing if the sample sizes are different? This is not about any real scientific study, more like a personal test :)

For example, if one thing got voted on 10 times and has an average value of 6.5, and another thing got voted on 6 times and has a 6.1, is the 6.5 thing actually more liked? Or is this small sample size still so random that it could with a high chance go both ways?

I've never done anything like this, if someone could explain it or direct me to the correct key words/links, that would be hugely appreciated :)

I've read up a bit on p-value determination, but I'm not sure what my "null hypothesis" is here actually, numerically. If I'd put it in words I guess my hypothesis would be "this thing is more liked than the other thing", but honestly, it seems like my specific case would be much simpler than all the stuff I'm reading here :D
