Depends on whether your thing is intended for public or private use. If it's just a static website to share files with friends and family or a chat service for a similarly limited group, then no, the GDPR does not apply.

Most popular Fediverse instances are clearly made for public use however.

CF has only been public for a few years. Give it a decade and I'm sure they'll be just as evil as Google.

For music, we use some variant of mp4 or lossless

AAC is only 5 years younger than JPEG. Lossless music formats are about as ancient as GIF.

Battery life is seriously impressive and they do offer some customisations over stock that aren't even found in LOS but overall pretty meh and bloated.
