Yes you have to sign up with personal info to create an account.
Verizon and the companies it owns (Straight talk, tracfone, total, Walmart family mobile) has an unlock policy where a device is fully unlocked 60d after activation. You can touch the phone all you want but it'll stay locked for those 60 days. On or around day 61 it'll be unlocked and you're free to use it on any carrier you choose.
It's not too good to be true. I've done it 3 times. Don't overthink it and just do it if you want a SE3.
If you get a slim case with grip you're less likely to drop it. That'll negate the need for a massive case that looks like it belongs to a miner. Tech21 and Speck have quality affordable options.
