So are we just supposed to allow (heck, even support!) Ukraine despite them implementing a system of modern slavery for their people, blocking civilians from fleeing, and forced conscription, some of it even slated to last even beyond the end of the war, because to even criticise it is "helping Russia"? Helping Russia do what, exactly? Look better than Ukraine? That's on Ukraine to be the big boy.

This is not Call of Duty, a war is waged for political reasons, and therefore the politics of it should be laid bare.

The new draft law on the mobilization of workers is intended to "ensure the functioning of the national economy under martial law", in the words of those drafting the law. It is noteworthy that in early August, Ukraine began to talk about a likely ban against military conscripts leaving the country for three years following an eventual end to military hostilities and martial law.

How exactly is Russia's bombs the only factor in the Ukrainian government imposing labour conscription on their people? Surely if they're so democratic, they could've found some other way to go about fixing the labour shortage.

In early August, deputies of the Ukraine president's 'Servant of the People' party in the national legislature ('Rada') introduced a bill that provides for the conscription of forced labor of all those who have not been conscripted to the armed forces. Formally free citizens who already cannot legally leave the country due to wartime restrictions will now also be subjected to forced labor.

This was really inevitable, yeah.

My uninformed opinion on this is that he is so immensely rich that Twitter doesn't really need to be profitable in the long term anyway. Kinda like how YouTube usually operates at loss, but on Hitler's drug cocktail. It may bite him in the ass eventually because his whole house of cards of "real life Tony Stark" seems to be waning, but I think he's about as likely to become bankrupt as Yankee student loans are to be forgiven.

The flight attendants have promised a strategy of “CHAOS” — Create Havoc Around Our System, meaning unannounced work stoppages

That sounds really hardcore and disruptive. More power to then, but I hope the backlash isn't too extreme. It sounds like the sort of thing that could get you arrested in freedomland.

Pointless foreign war going badly? ✔

Worsening internal proletarian conditions? ✔

Popular distrust in government and its fundamental philosophy? ✔

Encroaching police state and murdering of protesters? ✔

I could see the USA going the way of either 1905 or 1932 sometime soon. Obviously I prefer first, but it's the Yankees, they probably will go for the latter. But it's not like this hasn't happened at least once every decade for the past 70 years and no revolution materialised. The true sack of potatoes were the American Tubers all along.

Honestly a general strike might be a cool idea at least for basic things like healthcare, rent control, guaranteed sick leave and other things like that, that basically every other stable country already has. Socialist parties are missing out on the opportunity.

I have a soft spot for David Tennant's Doctor, but that's just because he was the first handsome and respected character I've seen stimming on film without it being played for laughs. Same thing later on for Lee Miller's Holmes on the CBS Elementary series.

I guess Tulip from Infinity Train feels close to how I view my younger self in an adorable way.

But in general I try to avoid being uncritical of characters in media. I see them as being inspired by our reality (and critique it in that direction) rather than as ideals to emulate or actual facsimiles. I find it way more interesting when they aren't in fact "literally me" and deviate from the similarities at some point.

Yeah, it might not be the best place to learn about world history, but so far I've been using to get some basic understanding of less ideologically/internationally relevant Cuban stuff. For example, the development of their IT sector.

They could call it "The International Community"

That's a lot of African representation, which is nice because South Africa is particularly small compared to the other original members. Would be kinda sadfunny if the ancap from Argentina wins the election and tries a complete 180 on this, but otherwise this is great news. I guess I expected Cuba and Syria would also be on the first batch, but they might be testing the waters before whipping out the "controversial" ones.

Watch the dollar drop like a Yankee's net worth after suffering an accident without health insurance.

It's pretty niche, but I can't stop listening to Satellite High's "Sharks!". I also tend listen a lot to the whole Blood on the Dance Floor Michael Jackson album, even if I find some songs (and specially lyrics) not that good.

I certainly intend to abide by the rules of wherever I'm posting on, but on some other forums I've moderated in the distant past there was this feature where you could issue an official and private warning to user who, although not breaking a rule, could be getting close to it. I don't see any way of issuing such an warning right now.

Although I think just sending a direct message as a mod works fine for all of lemmy for now, what do the devs and community think of such a feature in the future?

Lots of the classical writing on property and capital are from a pre-software era, which doesn't make it wrong, but I see many things that are so extremely exacerbated with software that have been peeking my interest lately.

For instance, I'm not aware of any other profession in history that can, as the software companies themselves call it, "turn pizza into code". Such low costs to producing what is essentially brand new capital that requires marginal labour to operate are unprecedented AFAIK. If I were to speculate, that is exactly why software developers are so exalted in the capitalist media and market, even though a lot of their work is either useless or discarded (just look at google graveyard) despite their disproportional salaries. They literally turn food and electricity into intangible and scalable capital.

(I'm generally from the field, if it looks like I hold it against y'all lol)

After google took down Vanced (a custom hacked youtube viewer with no ads and a ton of features), some people on github have made an even more robust and open version called ReVanced. Since the youtube monopoly implies we're forced to use this shit platform anyways, what do y'all think of this tool for android phones?

Edit: I should've made it "Youtube alternative frontend appreciation thread" because y'all suggested many good ones I hadn't heard of.
