The thing is, he does actually seem to have been a very good local member. He was dreadful as opposition leader, but as "the local rep" in a single seat he was competent and conscientious.
It's a weird dichotomy. His performance as a single member might have won him a longer leash to be opposition leader
He handled that well, I can give him that. On what's clearly a challenging day for him personally, he's been quite dignified in defeat
