When you have to pay a QB a mega contract, you lose the ability to keep star skill players, who can catch balls in crucial situations, because you can’t afford them while also having to spend on defense. You draft Caleb Williams with the #1 pick to reset the rookie contract, and just load up at the skill positions and defense with the cap space.
