People have become so jaded from years and years of corporate monopolizing, they no longer remember what an internet run by real humans feels like.

I'm not saying that in order to excuse them. Quite the opposite. To make this whole "federated" thing work, we all have to remember the empathy we lost dealing with the Facebook's and Twitter's of the world.

An internet run by the people for the people is by nature going to have more empathy' and therefore more risk of hurt feelings. We need to be aware of that.

It's an Aero Commander 500S Shrike. One of my favorite aircraft.

That entire film was a masterpiece that doesn't get the credit it deserves. The soundtrack especially has never been topped.

Turn off porn on the "all" thread without having to block other NSFW content. It's getting pretty bad blocking three or four porn communities every time I try to browse, but not being able to block the instances they're all coming from.

Was about to ask the same thing. Ideally I'd like to just keep pornography from showing up in my "all" without having to block it entirely or hide it entirely.

I'm no prude, but if I want to see the porn, I'll go to the community to see it and keep my "all" feed safe for work.

Agreed. Religion needs to be kept in the home or places of worship.

The understanding should be that when you step outside to do business, go to school, or what have you, that your religious beliefs stay behind.

Whether that's a politician voting on abortion or a baker making a cake for a gay wedding...your personal religious beliefs have zero decision making merit outside your front door.

Until that happens, petty stupid differences will keep society stunted in the middle ages.

Federation IS the protection.

The ability of instances to choose which other instances they want to federate with means unpopular instances that abuse things like ads and bots will quickly find themselves secluded in their own echo chamber.

Personally I doubt I'll delete my account on Reddit. But as someone who will cling to old.reddit.com and adguard to the bitter end, I'll happily let my gather dust unless there's a support question or something for a community that hasn't taken off here.

Keeping Reddit as a backup will at least being me some productivity back. I'm supposed to be a writer, I would probably down more times actually doing that anyway.

I don't think it's too abstract for people. I think we're all just really bad at explaining it to non-techies.

When you move to a city, choosing the neighborhood you want to buy your house in doesn't stop you from being able to drive around looking at others.

It ain't rocket science.

I pay for adguard DNS. Rather than use an app on individual devices, I just put the official DNS into my router and problem solved when I'm at home. Works like a charm.

You are technically correct. The best kind of correct.

Rimworld is pretty resource light and runs native on Linux. Has the benefit of being one o of the greatest games ever, too. If you're into to that kind of game (colony resource management and light war crimes)
