For me it was hardware ethics.

Spending thousands every couple of years because a marketing department tells you your old device is suddenly shit just doesn't sit well with me.

I've used the same $400 dollar phone for three years now, keeping it updated with lineageOS. And I've kept my trusty 6 year old editing desktop relatively capable with routine part upgrades and Linux.

Our entire economic system is based on making people buy new shit as often as possible, and that's so ridiculously unsustainable it's insane most people just put up with it so long as they can keep their nose down watching tiktok.

You're assuming that the point of the American justice system IS to refrain and rehabilitate. It's not.

A for-profit prison system seriously is low-key the most fucked up thing in a country full of fucked up things.

American prisons exist to make a profit for their investors. They do this by both government subsidies (which are calculated per inmate) and using the prisoners as cheap labor that they legally only have to pay pennies.

The system NEEDS a continuous influx of prisoners (slaves) to remain profitable. Rehabilitation is anathema to that.

My girl can be deep in sleep on the opposite side of the house and I still can't open the wrapper on a cheese slice without her appearing like magic.

Photoshop doesn't have a native G'MIC plugin feature. You can't wave that away as not Adobes fault!

That's how stupid you sound.

Different products have different features and different ways to do things. It's not Gimp's sole purpose to just clone every feature from Photoshop. It's not a Photoshop clone, it's a piece of software in its own right.

Gimp makes great use of the amazing G'Mic filter tool. Adobe doesn't. That doesn't make Gimp better than Photoshop.

Different software makes different choices and people choose whichever they want to use and shut the hell up about it.

Those aren't tasks. those are tools.

A task would be if to give us an example of an "end result" that you can accomplish in PS that you can't in GIMP.

Not what tools you use to make it. But the content that comes out the other end.

I'm not going to argue that PS has some extra tools that make stuff easier to do. It has the resources to develop them, after all.

But there is no drawing, animation, photo edit, composition or other end product that you can ONLY do with Photoshop. The only people who say that are people who have never used any alternative.

Mastodon (specifically mstdn.ca). Lemmy.ca, pixelated (though I rarely use it like I should) and I'm hoping to soon get a tilvids account to document my progress modelling for X-plane and creating the assets for my own computer board game.

Up here in Canada, Staples has been dealing MacBooks since at least 2015or so. (when I was there)

Edited because my old brain had to remember the dates.

In 2013, we started selling ipads. it was a few years later that they added MacBooks

Neither.

There's a reason Apple reports "Shipments" instead of "Sales".

In order to get the "honour" of selling apple crap, a retailer has to commit to a certain dollar value of inventory-on-hand.

If those units collect dust in that retailers back-room, Apple doesn't give a shit. And it's notoriously difficult to RMA unsold product to them.

Hahahaha.

Call them again and ask the same question. Record their answer. Then keep on torrenting legal stuff.

If they're dumb enough to come after you for something that is patently false, enjoy getting your retirement paid for by your ISP.

It's one of my favourite films. But if I were to look for a reason why, I wouldn't have an answer for you. Because honestly I agree with most of what you say.

See to me, the movie is interesting in that neither the supposed protagonist (mac) or the antagonist (Ratched) are the main characters. Ratched has no character arc at all, and Mac's is not what the audience thinks it is.

They are opposite forces of nature operating on the actual main character, Billy Bibbit.

Both Ratched and Mac are just symbols. Mac is obviously an agent of chaos, and Ratched is an agent of strict order.

Ratched was not a character. She was a cold unfeeling professional who was doing her job keeping order at the expense of empathy. If she had more empathy and had taken the time to get to know her patients better, she would have perhaps understood how her response to the various situations would lead to Bibbit's ultimate circumstance. (I'm being vague here to avoid spoilers, obviously)

But that doesn't make her a villain, however, since it's still Mac, the agent of chaos, who created the situation for his own selfish reasons in the first place that eventually led down that path. But he (chaos) wasn't evil either. If he had known where his introduction of chaos into Billy's life would have lead, it's unanswered whether he would have done things differently because the chief takes care of him before that can happen. It seems not, since he still blames Ratched in the aftermath rather than taking even a moment to look inward.

The chief's character was just that of a "watcher". His dialog would have been meaningless, since his role was simply to observe. He was, in effect, a third force...consciousness; watching to see who wins, chaos or order. But he more than anyone comes to understand that neither side is evil or good, it's just how it's applied. In the end, neither side on it's own offers any answers, and so he's just done with it and leaves.

The movie is really the Tragedy of Billy Bibbit. And it's a lot more interesting from that perspective.

It's still early. But this is pretty far ahead in the "coolest thing I'll read today" column.
