Why do tech journalists keep using the businesses' language about AI, such as "hallucination", instead of glitching/bugging/breaking?

How might we help and encourage people to leave Twitter?

[–] ALostInquirer@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Do people think it's a good thing, or simply the thing where those they know are?

What is the ontology of a concept or idea? If nothing doesn't exist materially but strictly conceptually, does it not exist or is there a different term one should employ to refer to it? 🤔

Thanks for the pointers, I'll have to give'em a look! Eusociality does sound right in line with what I was wondering about, but hadn't heard of it before!

But lemmy to me, who browses /all/new, has a terrible problem with “spam” - valid posts in some cases but one person posting the same thing to 20 communities and overwhelming the feed

Also sometimes "spam" with a bunch of posts to a single community by someone really trying to liven it up via posts alone. Something I sorta understand but how often has that worked for any online community? 🤨

Yeah, that's one of the big downsides that occurred to me as I wrote this. Similar issue with trying to merge any similar but distinct communities

...Does anyone have data on how many people still use checks?

I thought of "surfing the web" as more of a superficial approach personally. I was thinking more along the lines of "researching" or digging through sites with a similar topic but each went deeper or in different directions than the first.

Although on second thought and a little looking around, it looks like "net diver" never took off as its own term? What strange rocks have I been under? 😵

Have you seen Publii yet? Dunno how well it works on Linux, but there's a version for Linux as well.

Fairly certain, as I hadn't downloaded anything on my phone when away from my PC that would have produced a notification to mirror. Also, sorry, I should have mentioned from the start that I typically run my phone in Do Not Disturb and Silent to minimize any notifications whatsoever.

On further digging I did notice that it looks as though the files mentioned in the notifications may have been downloads, but from literally years ago in, I think, every case (e.g. from 2018!). I don't think I even had Connect installed back then to have caught those notifications. 🤨

Sorry, question's long, but the tl;dr of it was do you take more time on: name or appearance?

Would you prefer a hands-off, leave them to their own devices kind of approach, a keep at arms reach gently advise, or something else altogether?

As in lots of water slides as a way around, pools for the splashings (or whatever you call a watery landing), and in general whatever else a water park may have going on.

btw...i've never been to a water park, but I know the horror stories surrounding them...Let's just imagine somehow those are addressed here.

For those unaware, Lichess is a really slick site for playing chess online, and a kinda similar site exists with Online Go for playing Go online.

Would love to know if there may be similar for classic card games and dominoes, and thanks in advance for any pointers!

This is something I've gone back & forth over as I've contributed to some projects online but have been hesitant to mention it when applying for jobs. Typical reasons such as wanting to keep work/personal life separate.

Was it one of the only places you found a forum for something you were interested in or a fan of? Or something else entirely?

Creatives of whichever fields, whether writers, artists, musicians, meme-makers, developers, film makers, and the like and/or communities, I'm curious to know about some of the people around the fediverse creating some original stuff.

I know of a few over on the Mastodon side, and some communities forming here, but I imagine there are way more I'm unaware of.

Emphasis on the some, as I know all too well the old tale of no one not enjoying [subject] more than fans of [subject]. Also to be really clear, this isn't intended as a dig at those that don't become jaded, so much as genuine curiosity.

I've had the misfortune of really enjoying some genre stories only to find it harder to maintain interest in others I come across due to overfamiliarity making what might otherwise be interesting twists or turns feel a little...Predictable. It's a bummer that even taking breaks from some genres doesn't seem to assuage.

Preferably realistic features, but if your perfect shoe involves some kinda anti-grav hover features, I'd absolutely understand.

Heelies? Pfft, check out my real hover-slides.

Was a lot of it classic word of mouth, email, etc.?

I imagine something like that, but I'm wondering as I feel like there may be some useful pieces of knowledge that may be worth recalling as people gradually start to move back out of the more centralized sites/services.

Of the senses we're familiar with or aware of, anyway, e.g. taste/smell/hearing/vision/touch.

I'm thinking of like "Is there a [blank]" or "Where would I find [blank]" sort of community where one might ask things like, "Is there a creator/YouTube channel/blog covering [blank]" or "Where would I find a durable [blank]?"

Sort of a general looking for [thing/source] community, rather than personal help/care kind of community (as I know some of those are around).

Atm I think the AskLemmy communities are sorta being used for these questions, so I'm guessing maybe there isn't an alternative?

This question always comes to mind whenever I see people jogging along sidewalks, and wonder. Sidewalks are generally concrete or cement or something, which is definitely harder than dirt, so...
