I was in my mid to early teens and Minecraft wasn't out fully yet. It was a holiday season get together with family, my family flew across the country to spend time with them. My cousin, my older brother, and myself were all playing together when I accidentally broke a block underneath an anvil for the first time and learned they could fall. This was on a platform pretty high in the sky so I assumed it would be no big deal. I let out a muted "oh." of mild surprise at my discovery, then a few seconds later heard my cousin the the other room roar "WHAAAAAT?!".

A small message popped up on my screen: "James was squashed by a falling anvil."

Funny to think so such a small thing ended up becoming the inspiration for my go to username from then on.

I'm /really/ gonna need a source for that

That's an entirety different proposal with a very different outcome. There's absolutely nothing linking the two other than they mention adverts.

Hell, that proposal aims to improve the privacy of advertising impressions over what we have now, that's actually a win in my book

Cheers for moving over! I'll almost miss the 50/50 nature of that sub being NSFW

I got in pretty deep for a teen without a day job, 375 bucks or so. I eventually saw the writing on the wall and sold my account on the grey market, but even then part of me was saying "what if it finished and I regret the stuff I have up?". We're years later now and I'm glad I played it safe.

I'll grant, that's a version I could see myself trying

I've taken to just blocking the more popular communities I don't care about, like sports stuff

Codenames has blown up, Pandemic was super popular in 2019 but I can't bring myself to want to be anywhere near it now for some reason. I'm trying to think of others but those jump to mind as pretty big ones.

I think it was Whitehall mystery that has a similar style of play where you're chasing jack the ripper ask he commits his string of murders. I like the concepts, after I play Beast tomorrow I should have a better sense of what level of fighting back I find most exciting. Either way, I appreciate the reminder those games exist!

They're far from invulnerable, the nature of climate change is feedback loops, all it's going to take is an unusually hot, dry summer and some bad luck and you've got crop failure.
