Noam Chomsky for example is accused of the same thing for the Pol Pot genocide, though at the time he was right for the same reasons

It's also a valid opinion to criticize Chomsky for his reaction to the Cambodian genocide.I can't recall all the details of how things went down, so I have no comment myself, but I do have other criticisms of him.

It doesn't make him a fascist, or a Nazi/Nazi sympathizer. That would detract from what I have to say about the people who actually are, since that's a separate conversation. Same goes for the devs perhaps (but that's also a separate conversation).

What "Great Man Theory" does to a person

Do they expect lemmy.world admins to police 25K people across 700+ servers? I don’t think that’s how it works.

I think that the expectation is that lemmy.world needs to show a good faith effort to moderate users coming from their instance. I'm not sure whether they have or have not done this, since it is not my home instance.

I would caution against putting so much faith in them both so strongly. They both favor American establishment liberal politics, which is transparent to many due to the fact that a lot of Americans agree with those politics, and that they appear very reasonable in comparison to whatever tf Republicans are up to on a given day.

It's not a bad thing that they tend to have a very dry and straightforward tone, but all outlets are biased, and it's important to remain critical at all times if you want to have an accurate picture of a current event.

It's also very healthy for the community at large, IMO.

Ah, glad to hear it :)

My hope is that this comm can grow to represent a "united left" faction of online Portland communities, now that people are trickling in.

It sucks that on r/Portland I almost always see left-of-liberal viewpoints in response to center-right comments that are so prominent there. It would be nice to have a place where constructive discussion can be had and opinions can be refined, since I know in real life such views are fairly well represented among our neighbors.

I hope that our mod @polymerwitch@lemmy.ml is sympathetic to cultivating this sort of space. At minimum they recognize here in this post the crimeblogging happening on the subreddit which is a significant issue.

Yeah that sucks tbh

r/Portland liberals: "We need to deal with the 'homeless problem'. The city government should 'crack down' on them. Solutions that don't involve harassing them are complicated and expensive, but someone should do something..."

r/PortlandOR chuds: "Let's go out there ourselves and grind homeless people into a pulp ourselves instead of waiting for PPB to do it for us"

There is one dipshit who keeps taking a "pro-Russia" line in the shittiest most obnoxious way IMO. I have my own analysis of the conflict that doesn't involve unilaterally backing Ukraine, but that person really mucks it up so I can't really share anything about it. Not sure if they are "leftist" but whatever.

Not to mention that most Taiwanese do not support "Taiwanese Independence". To bring it up is just begging for WW3 for no real reason.
