Thanks! It kind of is, I saw it several times the last few days (never noticed before). It's kinda variant of FYI I guess?

Off-topic question: what does “PSA” stand for?

A network of (“thousands of”) servers has — like most things — pros and cons.

Some of the pros are:

  • The network is more resiliant against outages. If lemmy.ml is down, all other users can still access the network.
  • It's hard to take legal action against the network or to buy it out (like Big Players™ like to do to get rid of potential competitors).
  • It allows various similar or even conflicting moderation policies. The network, i.e. the infrastructure doesn't allow or prohibit any specific opinion (the communities do).
  • It allows for different ways to pay the bills: goodwill of the admin, donaitions, ads, fee or selfhosting. The latter also allows great control over the data so you control your privacy.

Some of the cons are:

  • Content is replicated across servers, which increases the total amount of data stored.
  • Latency and speed suffer.
  • Interoperability with the wider Fediverse is less than 100%, which can create confusion and frustration.
  • Discovery is more difficult.

I really like Stremio. It doesn't notify you, but (with the right add-ons) there's a huge catalogue that's updated regularly. It includes even a calendar which displays the upcoming episodes of series you added to your library.

I think you need to subscribe (from your instance) to the community first or did you do that already?

Then you should be able to select the comminity when creating a new post.

I want SSO in the Fediverse too. Each instance should include an identity server which can be used to sign in to other instances (if they don't block you). That would be awesome.

I'm not one of the new users but I'm happy because the Lemmyverse feels much more alive now compared to a year ago. ☺️

Also Gitea is working on federation support using ActivityPub.

I agree that mentioning them is not helpful if the question explicitly is about WhatsApp vs. Telegram. However, Signal surely is simple enough that it can be used by anyone capable of using WhatsApp. It free, encrypted and a lot more trustworthy than any F**book app ever will be.

This is what happened to Gab. IIRC Truth Social never federated at all.

Yes, I think so. It could. Is it likely to happen? No!

I see a distributed architecture central to have a “public space” online that works in the long term. The communication infrastructure shouldn't be controlled by any single party.

However the way people work and the way capitalism works, it's utterly difficult for something like ActivityPub to become the standard. F**book joining in frightens and encourages me at the same time.
