Moderators interested in migrating to a new community on another instance might want to consider selecting an instance and doing so sooner rather than later so that users here have time to see a migration post here and subscribe to the new community.

The sole moderator here, @gandolfini_the_grey@lemm.ee, last commented/posted a month ago. I've no idea how closely he's monitoring the situation, but it's possible that if he doesn't log in for the next three weeks, he might not notice what's going on until after the instance has gone down.

If that happens, then he won't have a great way to point to any new community. Maybe monitor !newcommunities@lemmy.world or !communitypromo@lemmy.ca, and he could post an announcement there?

This is especially relevant when promoting a new community in the aforementioned communities, as otherwise it's less convenient to visit and join your community. A standard link would take someone off-site to whichever site the community's on, instead of its copy on their home site.

Forgot to include this key point as I was writing and revising all this:
Include these mentions in your post bodies! Having it in the title of the post alone doesn't help, as it doesn't create any link to click or tap through.

p.s. when typing these mentions, the WebUI will try to provide suggestions to autocomplete, select the right one and it should do the trick. App interfaces will vary but should provide some method to do similar in their post/comment editors, either try typing the mention or looking for an exclamation point in the editor and following what the interface offers to help.

I often come across ideas for new communities (sometimes I even have them myself), but I'm not always sure whether they would get traction.

How about a "suggest a community" community, where people can post suggestions, and get feedback on the idea, maybe tweak it a bit to be more useful, and also look for co-moderators?

By default, ActivityPub sites don't know of other, remote sites. Any remote site stuff you're seeing is because somehow the site your on was made aware of the other's stuff. Typically this may be that a user learns of a remote site's stuff in some way and decides to follow from their home site by looking it up via their site's search then subscribing/following.

All of the above format-specific links I've provided above are means of finding some remote sites' stuff to follow on one's home site. Below are some additional tools and methods to further help when using some of these different sites.

If you're aware of other resources, tools, or methods that I've not mentioned here, please mention them in the comments! There's undoubtedly more to add that I've not come across.

Kind of a companion thread to the recent one on !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com asking people which community there were missing.

I had a quick look, and most of those seem to be niches that can't be filled until we reach a higher population.

There is still maybe some potential improvement about some less well-known community that other people are interested in and that could some additional activity.

I try to help to make less known communities known with the regular threads on !newcommunities@lemmy.world (now moving to !communitypromo@lemmy.ca ), but there is probably only a level of detail we have to stop at with 47k monthly active users.

One example is !jrpg@lemmy.zip, it seems reasonable active, and is probably a better compromise than having each game having its own community.

Similar with !patientgamers@sh.itjust.works, or !showsandmovies@lemm.ee. I posted a thread about Ted Lasso a few days ago, it got some nice comments, but probably not enough to have a full fledged dedicated community.
