Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Get that person a beer! 👍

[–] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 years ago

If you zoom in on the pic it rather looks like they were having one while spray painting!

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 68 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Its installation was controversial and it has been egged and spat on – with some jokers even marking the statue as a public toilet on Google Maps.

LMAO

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago

I'm gonna do that now.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 50 points 2 years ago (3 children)

One of the best things about Maggie Thatcher is she’s dead

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 24 points 2 years ago

As the saying goes, you should only say good things about the dead. So Maggie is dead. Good!

[–] brianary@startrek.website 13 points 2 years ago

I did not attend the funeral, but I approved of it.

I don't think she'll be happy to see this, when she's looking up on us.

The pensioner was put through the meat grinder because of Thatcher.

Good for him.

Edit: I can't find a picture of the graffiti. This is the best I can do:

[–] maynarkh@feddit.nl 5 points 2 years ago (3 children)

My guess is that the word was "bastard".

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They should put a statue of him spray painting it on her statue. He's the hero.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I guess the article linked to says it is (I read a different article about this earlier to be fair), although I also think that's a guess by police that it's a woman if that photo is all they have to go on.

[–] tsonfeir@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I think that scarf gave it away ;)

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Does it? I'm a man and I wear a scarf.

[–] Jaderick@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

I misread the number of asterisks and was really hoping it was “bitchass”

[–] Spuddlesv2@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 years ago

Be pretty funny if it was “white bastard”.

(Not sure if the Sam Kerr story has made headlines outside of Australia? If not my comment is in reference to that.)

[–] klemptor@startrek.website 36 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm sorry, what?! Who the fuck in 2022 thought "You know what we need? A statue of one of the most hated women in recent history!"?

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The Grantham Community Heritage Association erected it through donations. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Margaret_Thatcher_(Grantham)

Who on god's earth would donate to memorialize the wicked witch of Britain is beyond me though.

[–] Spotlight7573@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

The fact that that needs to have disambiguation parentheses is even worse: it means there's more than one statue.

[–] aniki@lemm.ee 26 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

Keep doing it. Do it at night, so no one can catch you on CCTV. Make it too expensive to keep cleaning so they are forced to remove it.

No statues for traitors.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I would do it. Pull it down like a Confederate statue.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Give it the Jebediah Springfield treatment.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Try an angle grinder instead of paint.

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 24 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Margaret Thatcher the Milk Snatcher

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Not to mention the jungle canyon rope bridges.

[–] PugJesus@kbin.social 22 points 2 years ago

I hope I'm half as cool when I'm their age.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

If it's bronze, someone should hit it with a tomato based sauce. And the timing was probably intentional.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago

I don't know if the timing was intentional or not. It's not the first time it was appropriately vandalized.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/may/15/margaret-thatcher-statue-grantham-egged-within-hours-of-it-being-installed

It was, as that article says, unveiled without ceremony. They knew people wouldn't approve of it. I guess they hoped they wouldn't notice it either.

[–] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 21 points 2 years ago

It's cute when old people do crime.

[–] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 21 points 2 years ago

The nanas are alright

[–] 4am@lemm.ee 17 points 2 years ago

Shouldn’tve pinched me wellbeing, simple as

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do people still walk past and play "Ding-Dong, the witch is dead!" on speakers?

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Oh man that would be so good.

[–] Nacktmull@lemmy.world 15 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Based granny.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

I think this pensioner has a good idea and I would like her to take this idea further. Could we, perhaps, smack the statue up with a large demolition hammer?

Good lesson prob not learnt that day

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

For a moment I thought this was something that happened during 8M.

[–] Deceptichum@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 years ago

What a ledge.
