Is there ever any explanation for that style of armour that so many people in DBZ wear?
It has a single origin. Sayayin culture. Remember Vegeta was a sayayin, and he and his friends introduced that type of armor when they landed on earth for the first time.
*Saiya-jin or Saiyan, if you prefer the english version. The word Saiya is supposed to be a pun on the japanese word Yasai (้่), meaning vegetable.
I believe sayans used it because they were under Friza's rule.

Dragon Ball Z was and always shall be one of the most important franchises in my life. This news is incredibly sad to hear. What a legend and influence. RIP Mr. Toriyama.
