Anime fans have unironically contributed more to internet video technology than companies like netflix because they are highly technical, extremely obsessed and have a high bar for quality. x264 was anime fans, for example. I don't think AI subs will go over very well if they aren't any good.

why is crunchyroll paying for translators in the first place? isnt it the publishers that have to supply the subtitles?
I'm guessing there is a market for them to sub obscure anime that never had subs in the first place
I think Crunchyroll is one of the bigger publishers/localizers at this point.
Why are they paying money for anything at all? Go back to your pirate roots, crunchyroll.
