I tried for a good couple hours this last weekend to get into this game, but found myself not being stimulated enough. I will try again this upcoming weekend once more, but the mechanics may just be too outdated for me.

It's long in the tooth but I like it, I get that it may not be everyone's cup of tea especially if you're not a retro gamer.
I'm definitely a retro gamer. Does it get more interesting once you make it out of the newbie area? New Haven, or whatever it's called.
Yes it gets a lot more interesting once you settle into what you want to do with your character. Things like exploring, dungeoneering, treasure hunting or even fishing, fish until you get a boat and you can explore the seas and fight pirates. It's a sandbox game, I kind of had trouble dealing with it at first because I'm used to levels in rpgs so I had no clue where to go. The discord for UOAlive has a handy new player channel too that I ask lots of questions in.
