Back in high school I’d play Tribes (shifter mod) fucking constantly. I was one of the best players around, but looking back it was probably because everyone was on dial up and I had a cable modem. It was so fucking fun though. Great game. I would never be able to play it now that I’m an old.

It's dead on arrival. Tiny playerbase (and rifght now free 2 play) and they want ridiculous money after release. Also the early access is supposedly "finished core gameplay", with them having two modes. No vehicles.
Honestly, mostly a cash grab.
Wanted to play this during the beta but apparently every time I checked the servers were down for maintenance.
From what I hear? it is good. Movement is closer to Ascend than 2 but still feels really good.
The main issues are that there are no vehicles and... it isn't Tribes 2. And considering that the crowd we are going to be looking at are the same crowd that are literally still playing Tribes 2 twenty-three years later, it is going to have a serious uphill battle. Because anyone who talks about it is going to get the stigma of "not being a real Tribes fan"... even when most people playing it weren't born when 2 came out.
I dunno. I'll probably give it a go but I am not optimistic. Less because it is missing specific design choices that were questionable 23 years ago and more just because I don't think I have it in me to deal with pubbing in a coordination heavy shooter anymore. Also... this is going to have Battlefield syndrome where you just get clocked by snipers after jogging across the entire map. Just like 2 did.
Everything I know about Tribes makes me feel like I will hate it... Or, well, that I probably could enjoy it, but that I will be bad at it and there will be people who are so good at it that it is not fun to play. I'm not overly encouraged to try this new incarnation.
So basically me with any PvP shooter?
I keep throwing myself into the grinder that is Chivalry 2 so maybe I'll just dive into Tribes anyway lol
Since when was Tribes a science fiction series? I guess it always was...
