Cw: fish

On the 2nd of march 1964, a group of indigenous rights activists, among them actor Marlon Brando and Puyallup tribal leader Bob Satiacum, illegally fished in the Puyallup River to protest the denial of treaty rights to Native Americans. This form of civil disobedience is known as a "fish-in", and in this specific incident both Brando and an Episcopal clergyman were arrested.

The fish-in was staged by the National Indian Youth Council, a Native American civil rights organization formed in Gallup, New Mexico in 1961. It became part of the so-called "Fish Wars", a set of protests spanning decades in which Native American tribes around the Puget Sound pressured the U.S. government to recognize fishing rights granted by the Point No Point Treaty.

The protests eventually won indigenous people in the area the right to fish without state permits - in the 1974 case "United States v. Washington", U.S. District Court Judge George Hugo Boldt stated that treaty right fishermen must be allowed to take up to 50% of all potential fishing harvests and required that they have an equal voice in the management of the fishery.

The so-called "Boldt Decision" was reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in 1979 and has been used as a precedent for handling other, similar treaties.

IMO one of the keys to writing good crime/detective fiction: individual cops may be capable of being heroic in some circumstances, but the police as an institution must be portrayed in the most damning ways possible, as unfathomably evil and irredeemably corrupt. James Elroy is a master of this.

I’ve looked into the case for compatablism, and given a non-incoherent definition of free will, I’m whole heartedly in agreement. It was basically my own position from the start. In summary the determinists are right, but we need to remember how much individuals’ wills affect the world. People have greater “freedom” the more they are able to exercise their “unfree” wills. As Schopenhauer said, “you can will what you want, but you can’t will what you will.” Thus, I can justify agreeing with the statement “people are freer when they realize how their freedom is restricted.”

When the revolution comes, the people who decided to blast shitty pop music on top of the already unsavoury noisescape in shops will be put against the wall by the Special Neurodivergents' Revolutionary Committee.

As much as I yern for social interaction, I really feel some type of way that one of the few people that does get in contact with me on a semi consistent basis is someone that has shitty views on... everything.

The first time we spoke after high school she talked me up for a while before pitching an MLM grift. And that kind of already had me a bit apprehensive to talk with her much afterwards. But she spent a long time posting some really shitty queerphobic shit on her socials as well as a bunch of entrepreneur slop. I still respond whenever she sends me a text, but it's like... eh.
