i visited this in person, they even sell mini versions of the statue with the cone on the head. kind of weird that the government still considers it "vandalism" at this point

[–] bort@feddit.de 42 points 2 years ago (1 children)

if they would stop calling it vandalism, it would take away all the fun

[–] BleatingZombie@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I also worry what some people would do next to keep the tradition of vandalism going

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 22 points 2 years ago

Now that is a work of art.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Beautiful, this is why indigenous people loved the Scots and the Irish so much

[–] TotallyNotSpez@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago

Aw, you're too kind! :)

[–] scthatheworm@lemm.ee 36 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I'm all for art, but these subsidy hunting pieces need to die already or is gonna be the death of public funding for art itself. If it doesn't convey anything, what is the point of placing it in public?

[–] clearleaf@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They can be interesting for a little while but the artists never seem to be thinking about the people who will have to see it every single day, they only think about themselves and the statement they want to make. It's completely egotistical and creates an environment that feels the opposite of welcoming and inclusive.

[–] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 2 points 2 years ago

I like this statement.

In the end every instinct to share something with others is egothistical, since we believe what we find great or interesting must be for everyone else too. Even writing this comment I am convinced that it's worth enough for you to read.

[–] harmsy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

I can't agree more. Abominations like these are a waste of material.

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 33 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Looks like a....erm..how do I put it....a chocolate starfish that's had a breach.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

I'm glad I could "help":-P.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Well, art is often made for the purpose of provoking questions. I'd say "mission accomplished" here.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 11 points 2 years ago

(the mission was someone's side piece getting paid)

[–] KevonLooney@lemm.ee 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

These pictures posted in this thread are all definitely "art". You can tell because they clearly provoke emotion, even if that emotion is confusion.

But remember, just because it's art doesn't mean it's good art.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

But remember, just because it’s art doesn’t mean it’s good art.

That's the point most people in arts love to ignore, it seems.

The Scottish sculptor Iain McColl designed the second post, The Cockerel.

The influences behind this one are Miro's The Fork and Branusci's The Cock.

Here's The Cock:

I'm ALMOST sure that's not what a cock is supposed to look like..

Also, "here's the cock" is such a weird sentence fragment regardless of context 😄

Diogenes walls in dragging a chicken fursuiter

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It looks about right to me. Should I see a doctor?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Either that or an appraiser!

[–] m0darn@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 years ago

The sculptor reportedly said:

"Le Coq c'est moi"

"The Cock is me"

Also related:

Coq means rooster in French and is not used as an insult or a euphemism for the penis at all.

But your mileage may vary.

It's the seventh butthole of Glasgow

[–] RustyShackleford@literature.cafe 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It reminds me of the art piece statue in Beetlejuice.

[–] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Nobody knows but it's provocative. It gets the people going.

[–] doctorcrimson@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

It's actually female genitalia. It's very clearly an ass hanging above a vagina.

[–] Zozano@lemy.lol 13 points 2 years ago

Uncultured swine, that's Fass from Warframe

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

Ireland meanwhile spent €5 million for a giant metal dildo.

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 10 points 2 years ago

I've got spurs, that jingle jangle jingle

[–] Diabolo96@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 years ago

Probably one of the monstrosities Lovecraft described in his stories. I read the stories in French and I could only barely imagine what the f he was talking about but maybe the artist read the first words describing an 'Elder thing' and decided it would look cool ? That or it's meant to represent a fleshy palm tree and the hole in the middle is its gaping mouth ready to devour jaywalkers ?

[–] Betch@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

I can hear this picture

[–] PhlubbaDubba@lemm.ee 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've seen some stuff like this being set up in pedestrianization efforts, IIRC it's basically hostile architecture but for assholes who drive too fast in pedestrian dense areas.

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

How does slow them down? Like they get distracted by confusing or thought provoking art?

[–] PhlubbaDubba@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

It's a big fucking statue strategically placed to be an obstacle for through traffic to have to slow down to be sure they're getting past safely

[–] unreasonabro@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

clearly its a starfish reproducing with a sea slug. silly question

[–] Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Came here expecting a Scottish 'ITS CRAAAAP'
