New York dems really might be the worst in the country.

In large parts of the state everybofy just votes for dems so everybody just runs as a Democrat even if they're a boilerplate republican.

And then they proceed to begrudgingly eventually do the worst possible version of anything as slowly as possible.

Not that weed legalisation is that important of an issue but new york "legalizing" recreational pot and now 4 full years later there still aren't any stores that can legally sell it practically anywhere outside a major city is a perfect metaphor.

People are just saying fuck it and selling it out of roadside stands and largely not being harassed because "we got sick of waiting for the fucking politicians to do literally anything right" is a reasonable argument.

The fucking governor almost lost to a long island dipshit chud because of how universally the democratic leadership in this state sucks rotten possum asshole.

I am once again begging liberals to understand that time is linear.

Edit: This is like saying, in 1942, "I really wish the nazis would go back to acting like they did in the early 30s" without a hint of irony.

Ooooohh I wish we could go back to the time before Drumpf said the magic Republican trigger words to activate all their MKULTRA fascist marching orders, they used to be so normal before 2016, le sigh obama-sad

Can't wait in 20 years for them to look at Donald Trump nostalgically and say he had a "charming wit" as God-Emperor Satan wins yet another GOP primary.

Unpopular opinion on Hexbear, but I don’t think Trump will ever get that nostalgic W treatment. W is a special case. The reason W was evil was because Iraq. Liberals in the mid 00s, after the invasion really started going bad for the US, had some vague notion that the invasion was bad. It wasn’t from some principled anti-imperialist or even just anti-war stance. It was largely because it wasn’t quick and easy as promised so it was making America look bad; and liberals just internalized that feel as “Iraq war bad”.

But once W left office and the US wound down quite so direct involvement in Iraq, liberals lost their anger over the war because it wasn’t actually based on anything. Lose your anger over the war, and you lose your reason to hate Bush.

(That said, there were plenty of left liberals who were against the invasion from a principled stance back in 2003. But those kinds of libs aren’t the one who are impressed with W and Michelle Obama sharing candy or whatever, tbf).

I don't think Trump will get the W treatment, but not for the reasons you describe. There was still Afghanistan in W's case, but W was only different from the typical politician in the sense that he leaned into the idea of being a dope to avoid looking like a carpetbagger. Beyond that, W very much comported with what was expected of a typical Republican. Trump is too offensive to liberal sensibilities on a much more visceral level. I really struggle to imagine them ever warming up to him on that basis alone.

Unpopular opinion on Hexbear

I agree on that point, if no one else does. Trump isn't really redeemable from a lib perspective because he shatters their fundemental belief that the US is a meritocracy. They need that illusion. Thats why they had to invent RussiaGate thats why they idolized Mueller, and why they all know what a Lev Parnas is (i have no clue).

Bush tested their faith on that - not because he killed over million Iraqis - but because he was dumb and sounded dumb. But, they could live with it because he was a Governor and went to Yale (credential bullshit). He stole an election the civil way, with lawyers and the Supreme Court. And civility is the iey here.

Bush could be redeemed because he was civil. Trump was far less destructive in office than Bush was to the world, but he was too rude. Libs only understand tone

“Why can’t Hitler be more like Mussolini and focus just on crushing labor movements and communists?” is something western libs definitely thought in the 1930s.

[–] Sephitard9001@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago

I mean that's basically the issue that anti-Trump Republicans express lmao. They signed up for Republican policy, they didn't want to be embarrassed by Trump's spectacle and culture war shit. Trump is leaning way too Hitler when he should be leaning Mussolini

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 28 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Not even doing the "moderate Republican" schtik. If I live long enough it's going to be real funny seeing Trump rehabilitated in 15-20 years.

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago

They'll be doing it the next time a Republican wins. I feel like their recent culture war shit is already significantly more insane than Trump lol.

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 18 points 2 years ago

It's going to take 8 years at an absolute maximum.

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 22 points 2 years ago

When I look up "New York Hochul", one of the first news stories I see has the headline 'Cocktails-to-go in New York still on the table: What Gov. Kathy Hochul proposes'

In a statement, Hochul said to-go drinks were a critical lifeline for the hospitality industry and a beloved treat for consumers. "Since then, we've legalized to-go alcohol on a temporary basis, and it's been wildly successful for bars, restaurants, and everyday New Yorkers."

I feel like combining that (and everything it entails) with this gives you a quintessential dem these days, being able to take your brunch mimosas with you while also (quietly) wanting to deport everyone with a darker complexion than new fallen snow

[–] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago

Did they actually use the word "treat"?

One of the few thing I got right when I was a lib was the conviction that when Democrats and Republicans “work together to get things done”, 100% of the time that “thing” is something that’s objectively very bad.

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 18 points 2 years ago

I miss when people weren't demanding better things

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago

Democrats have to be the first party asking to be less relevant than they are. If I was a lib, this would be a perfect time to make a "well ackyually le drumpf, WE'RE tired of winning." joke.
