If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

One of the rehabs has a fun weekly game to guess the species based on a very zoomed in photo.

I did get it right in the end, but I thought it was a little bit tricky.

Anyone got any guesses hoo this fuzzy foot belongs to?

I'll post the answer in the comments later in the day in case spoiler tags aren't working across the board.

Mountain lion!

Edit: Oh, I'm in superbowl...

It does look like a big cat foot. Wrong number of digits though.

When I was scrolling through my feed, there are plenty of other animals mixed in, so it did not register to me immediately as an owl, due to the lack of scale.

~~I'll guess O RLY.....?~~

Edit: Wait no. Let's try my favorite, the Barry White of owls, Mr Great Horny!

It does look like the fish fur used in Soviet style hats, but that is not this.

Hey! That's my sleep paralysis demon.

At least it's a cute and fluffy sleep demon!

This wasn’t a photorealistic render by Pixar?

Oh great, now I'm over here googling pictures of various owl feet 😂

Given what I've seen, I'm also gonna go with my neighborhood buddy, GHO

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Those won't be the strangest feet pics being Googled today, I'm sure! The internet is a wild place! 🤣

There were many good guesses. I can't fool you guys!

At first I thought it was a Snowy, but the color didn't look right. I'm used to them having the fuzziest toes of the owls. The only other foot that giant and fluffy is our dear friend, the GHO!

So I think you all got it or came in a very close second. Way to go!
