That was the smart gremlin. Creased me up as a kid. The first film scared the shit out of me. This film made it all funny and he was one of the best bits!
The absolute best bit was Phoebe Cates' wild call-back to her strange/dark monologue in the original Gremlins about how she hated Christmas due to her dad's horrific death.
It was so strange and out of place in the original Gremlins, it was great for them to satirize it in the sequel.
"Please...don't mention Lincoln! Something terrible happened to me once on Lincoln's birthday! I was six or seven, I had the day off from school. Mama let me go to the park - she made me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich... This man with a beard and a hat just like Abe Lincoln....I remember...oh god!"
Apparently Joe Dante, the director of both Gremlins movie initially refused to make the second one. But after the studio gave him a lot of money and complete creative control, he agreed to make Gremlins 2. And with that creative control he decided to make it a parody of the first one because he didn't really give a shit. And it was great!
