It maybe an unpopular opinion but the first one kinda felt lifeless to me

[–] Nacktmull@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I agree that it felt a bit lifeless but at least it´s true to the book, something that can´t be said about the abomination that Lynch directed. I keep telling myself that in a parallel universe Jodorowsky´s Dune was actually made and plays the role in pop culture that Star Wars plays in our universe.

The Lynch movie might be an abomination. But I just love it regardless.

Hey Pleb, nice to see you! I respect Lynch as the surrealist director he is quite a lot. Just when it comes to Dune I get very picky, because I read it a dozen times and it has been my favorite book since I was thirteen and the Lynch movie is ... really far away from Frank Herberts vision in my opinion. I am happy for you if you like it though, enjoy!

Hi Nakedmole, always nice to bump into each other. :)

I didn't actually watch any other Lynch movie. But yeah, that movie is more inspired by the book than that it follows it. I guess my love for this movies comes from the facts that I played the Lynch movie inspired Dune 2000 as a kid, and later watched the movie before I read the books.
I also love cheesy bad movies in general. And what could be more cheesy than Captain Picard carrying a Pug into battle?

Anyways, I'm thinking of seeing the double feature of this Dune movie in the cinema, as I didn't manage to catch the first one.

I didn’t actually watch any other Lynch movie.

Then you absolutely should imo. Lynch is legendary for a reason. I recommend Mulholland Drive, Wild at Heart and Eraserhead. Just know that Eraserhead is very creepy.

Me too! It was my first rts, which I played on my dads 386 :D

I get it somehow - at least as a joke - but stuff like this is exactly why I am personally not a fan of Lynch´s Dune. There simply are no pugs in the book and I will never get why someone would add weird stuff like that to a serious epic that takes place in one of the most deep and well thought through sci-fi universes ever created by an author. The Villeneuve movie does not capture the sheer depth of Herberts universe but at least he did not make up weird additional stuff that feels completely random. Yes, I admit it, I am a Frank Herbert fanboy and whenever I feel his vision is not respected I react like an angry child.

Anyways, I’m thinking of seeing the double feature of this Dune movie in the cinema, as I didn’t manage to catch the first one.

That´s great, have fun my dude!

The one criticism I saw from someone else was how dark it was. Like on a modern TV at home, some scenes were almost to dark to be seen

[–] THE_MASTERMIND@feddit.ch 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

It is the same problem i had with HP movies

[–] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 3 points 2 years ago

Harry Potter? Yeah a lot of the scene from the later sequel is just way too dark it's hard to even see what's going on.

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 2 points 2 years ago

HP movies colors are just so dark. It's probably my biggest gripe with the movie. All joy and color is gone from movie 5.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

It's probably because it had to spend so much time on character history/relationship and world building to get people familiar with the scenario who didn't read the books.

[–] BorgDrone@lemmy.one 1 points 2 years ago

My only complaint about it was that it was half a movie and it just randomly ended mid way through the story.

[–] sagrotan@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago

Not an opinion. It's a fact. I watched the 1984 version, spice diver edit, after it. Sooo much better.

Whew that's good to hear, I'm super hyped, got tickets for the 1st and managed to snag a dead center halfway back seat at my local theater.

That good huh, maybe i should give the first one a go 🤔

[–] bionicjoey@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 years ago (2 children)

IMO the first one nails the spectacle that one imagines when reading Dune, but struggles to capture the book's deeper meaning

[–] Nacktmull@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Exactly what I thought. The movie is very accurate concerning the story but lacks the impressive depth of the universe created by Frank Herbert in the book.

[–] aleph@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Very succinct summary, IMO.

I like the movie but it does lose a lot by dropping the character's inner monologues. I totally get why you'd do that for a film adaptation but the book characters are so internal and introspective that you really get a sense of their mental subtlety and the labyrinthine nature of the political landscape that they inhabit. Then also of course is how Paul (and later Leto II) subjectively experience prescience.

I'm hoping that Part Two really delves deeper into the psyches of both Paul and Jessica.

Who here is planning on watching it? I'll create the review thread later, but if someone wants to do it earlier, feel free

I really liked the first one. SO's not really in to scifi so it mostly gone over their head. We'll see if I get an opportunity to catch it in the cinema
