T-Bone Slim, born on this day in 1880, was an IWW member, working class songwriter, and author. Due to his popular, labor themed tunes, Slim was dubbed the "laureate of the logging camps".

Born Matti Valentin Huhta to Finnish immigrant parents in Ashtabula, Ohio, Slim became an itinerant worker after leaving his wife and family in 1912. It isn't known when Slim became a Wobbly, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), but he first appeared in the IWW's press in the 1920 edition of the IWW Songbook.

Slim became one of the IWW's most famous writers during the 1920s and 30s, and many people would buy the "Industrial Worker" just to read his articles - one ad from the paper read "there's a lot more in Industrial Solidarity and Industrial Worker than T-Bone Slim's columns".

Slim did not presume his working-class readership to be unintelligent people, making use of complex wordplay and experimental writing techniques, playing with ambiguity, satire and surrealism.

Slim was also well-known for his songs, such as the "Lumberjack's Prayer", a parody of the Lord's Prayer about the poor quality of food available for the working class, and "The Popular Wobbly", which experienced a revival among civil rights activists during the 1960s.

In spite of his renown in radical circles during his lifetime, many details of Slim's life remain unclear. During the mid-1930s, he settled in New York City, where he worked as a barge captain on the docks.

In May 1942, Slim's body was found in the East River. His cause of death remains unknown and has been subject to speculation. Following his death, Slim largely faded into obscurity, especially compared to more famous IWW-associated writers such as Joe Hill.

Slim's songs have been preserved, however, re-published in editions of the Little Red Songbook and covered by musicians such as Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips, and his own great-grandnephew, John Westmoreland.

Until recently, there was thought to be no surviving photographs of Slim, however, in 2019 two photos were discovered and published by Working Class History in a Newberry Library collection.

Sorting all my books in order from Completely Iconic to Not Even a Little Iconic

My dad invited me over to have dinner on friday with him and my brother out of the blue. He's a good dude but not the type to do this unless there's something to announce...

current speculation:

  • he got a job
  • he's getting engaged with his partner
  • he's moving in with his partner
  • my brother is moving in with his partner
  • all of the above?
  • none of the above??

leaning towards one of 3 and 4 atm. if he got a job and wanted to "announce" it he'd tell my sister at the same time, likewise with an engagement. But I've talked with both my dad and brother (who lives with my dad atm) about renting my dad's condo if i could get together the money, so it would make sense for that discussion to happen between just the three of us. will update, even if nothing happens cause that'd be pretty funny

"RION we love you and support you but you have been spending too much time on that communist website. When you go on that communist website it makes us feel sad. All you ever want to talk about is how capitalists have ruined the world. You talk about Marx like he is the second coming of christ and that makes us feel worried. We are afraid that if you don't stop using that Communist website you might actually overthrow the capitalist system and engage in a Maoist uprising against the landlords. We love you and care about you but we don't want you to overthrow the bourgeoise and take away our treats."

You know, a lot of all this could have been avoided if we kept pondering the orb. Maybe even all of it.

I am struggling at work. It's all so meaningless.

I feel like I'm accomplishing something when I cook, clean, hang out. But touching numbers in databases with dollar signs just feels worse than empty. Idk what to do, I can't believe my coworkers don't feel the same.

Damn, I just realized, in the last scene of GITS 96, the tank's autocannon shreds the entire tree of life bottom to top, symbolically showing that humanity has evolved towards ever more horrible and refined forms of violence, culminating in the Major as the ultimate weaponization of the human form. Motoko's last act as a human is an act of extreme violence to her superficially human body, the culmination of the theme of her alienation from humanity - In destroying her body she abandons her humanity, not to become less than human, but to explore becoming something else, something new and potentially wonderful. I guess there's also something in the contrast between the tank, a non-human weapon, and Motoko, a seemingly human weapon, and how even Motoko as the pinnacle of human violence can't overcome this non-human shaped weapon. When the tank-pilot is trying to crush her super-strong skull her face is totally indifferent, either because she feels no fear or remorse, or because she has lost control of her face.

Why do people keep saying "keep in mind this is the worst ai art will ever look" as if they aren't in realtime seeing everything get worse. Like imagine saying in 2004 "this is the worst google search will ever be" and getting transported to 2024. Things can get worse lol. Hell every blockbuster now looks like dogshit compared go like a mid budget movie from the 70s.

Russia has developed a nuclear spy satellite that tracks how many hot dogs I've had for dinner, so far it's 3.

What's the deal with torrenting these days. New TV shows only have like 30-50 people seeding at a time, it will take days to download an episode that just dropped. I remember years ago you could get almost anything you wanted in like an hour or so with how many people were seeding

I had a dream that I was taking a test to work with animals at a gas station, and the testers took me up in an aircraft, and one of them started bothering a jaguar by shining a light in its eye. The jaguar was on an island across a body of water from the gas station, and it swam over and attacked the testers. I ducked behind a pump and decided to use Jake from Animorphs powers (that was how I thought of it in my head) to turn into another jaguar and scare the first jaguar off. So I turned into a jaguar and tried to scare it off, but I was cognizant that this could turn into a fight over territory and then I woke up.

Also fuck yeah T-Bone Slim rules

New site tagine plucked from the wild (a BG3 discussion on reddit)

Also, the fun part in evil relationships isn't talking things out and open communication. If someone hurts your feelings, send them an assassin with a frowny face. Rather than an argument, start a proxy war and then makeup when your respective nations run out of people. Think less real life tragedy, and more cartoon villains. I find that stuff incredibly funny but I'm barely sane.
