It was a sad day when she hunted down every single straight male in the video games industry and shot them with a crossbow.

No, didn't you hear? She had guys sneak into the Democratic party offices, and place bugs!

Or maybe i'm thinking of a different -gate

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 40 points 2 years ago

Nixon got impeached because he went woke and started recording himself examining video games with basic feminist critiques.

This gamergate thing was one of the many formative moments of my life that pushed me further towards the left. I think it was a crossroads for many people, waking many up, but also plunging everyone else into a deepening pit of reactionary thinking and general bigotry.

It's forever funny to me that people get older, their tastes change, and they attribute their lack of interest to the scene changing and find some villain that changed it.

You see it all the time in music. But it's especially funny to me with games for some reason.

[–] axont@hexbear.net 34 points 2 years ago (2 children)

There are so many games these days too. It's an absolute golden era for indie games, but the gamergate crowd only focuses on how the yearly generic military shooter might have pronoun options, or maybe there's a single gay character in an RPG with hundreds of NPCs.

I'm old enough to remember that a gamergate rallying cry was something like, "Don't change our games, make your own games." Imploring folk to make their own games with feminist narratives or whatever. Well we live in that reality now, where the "SJWs" or 10 years ago are making games, or big studios are trying to pander. And yet that was still wrong.

[–] Stoatmilk@hexbear.net 56 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Did CHUDs forget that they won? When have CHUDs ever lost a culture war in the last 12 years? How about the last 44 years? Anything to the left of Reagan has been irrelevant for decades now.

You guys won already. Literally everyone except a select few people want the Turner Diaries to come true. Give it a rest, you've been doing a ten year long victory dance.

[–] axont@hexbear.net 30 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They don't feel like they've won. As long as the existence of anything outside of cis hetero crackers exist, they're mad. Anita Sarkeensian is still alive, and people know about her, so everything feels lost to them

[–] Raebxeh@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What’s the ideology called where they rely on an amorphous enemy that they constantly move the goalposts on to maintain people’s sense of outrage to justify hellish domestic policy? I forget.

Struggle is mitochondria of fascism. Without eternal struggle and therefore imagined eternal failure, you eventually gotta stop doing the fascism. If they utterly destroyed an enemy they'd have to keep finding new ones, if they don't have an absolute victory they take it as a defeat. It's cause they're stupid.

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 22 points 2 years ago

Mainstream video games have become more diverse and less horny in the past decade though which is what these guys are mad about

oooaaaaaaauhhh

^video games the second you critique them

>she prematurely ruined video games

People think like this can't be fixed. You'd explain an aspect about capitalism (what really ruined games) and they'd blame it on "wokeness" or something- Pit please

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 36 points 2 years ago (1 children)

it's crazy fascist G*mers are still malding about her a decade later

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago (4 children)

And the funny thing is, the right WON that culture war.

Look at progressivism, it's been irrelevant ever since 2014 and anyone who dares to have an opinion that isn't Hitler good is mocked by everyone under the age of 40.

?

I don't think this is anywhere near right.

[–] Flyberius@hexbear.net 13 points 2 years ago

I think it might be hyperbole

I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm pretty sure progressivism is anything but dead.

The 2nd most popular game on steam right now is literally one where you can literally kill, skin and fuck both animals and humans.

who is this person and how did they supposedly ruin games?

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 64 points 2 years ago (5 children)

It's Anita Sarkeesian, a video game journalist who became one of the centerpieces of Gamergate for saying such radical things as "sexism in video games exists and is bad".

Sarkeesian has literally 0 influence on anything, never did, but gamers have hated her with all their might for over a decade now. Her youtube podcast still gets dislike-bombed over 10 years after Gamergate.

[–] TimeTravel_0@hexbear.net 46 points 2 years ago (2 children)

damn I totally forgot about gamergate. hope I forget it again soon.

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 41 points 2 years ago (1 children)

blessed are the people with empty heads

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago

I just happened to be absent when gamergate happened and never bothered to look it up. It sort of feels like I skipped a cut scene accidentally cause my ass was on 4chan at the time.

[–] the_post_of_tom_joad@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago

I just lost the Game(rgate).

[–] WittyProfileName2@hexbear.net 27 points 2 years ago

Sarkeesian has literally 0 influence on anything, never did

Literally the only thing I'm aware of her criticism changing is making Emily playable in Dishonored 2.

[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

"sexism in video games exists and is bad"

frothingfash NOO!!!!

I'd never heard of this person before or Gamergate, but sounds about right for gamers.

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 17 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Don't look into this any more. Stay pleasantly unaware and happier

Her critiques weren't even anything over the top. It was very general lib feminism like "the fridged woman trope isn't nice" and "maybe not all female characters should be sex-objects with boob armor?"

she treated their favorite form of art (bideo games) as art, which is what they'd been whining for for years. if it's art, you can critique it as art.

they didn't like it.

If you dont like modern video games, make your own lol

Except chuds believe people are naturally talented and cant be bothered to learn what it takes to make games. Its a dog chasing its tail situation. Most people who go through the process of learning a skill generally tend to humble out, go more left in my experience

[–] PosadistInevitablity@hexbear.net 28 points 2 years ago (1 children)

In any other context this would be schizophrenic ramblings.

They are still focusing mental energy on Gamergate a decade later?

It was world of warcraft that ruined videogames. After that the videogame companies realized that subscription services and gambling like game desing was way more profitable. Dlc, online only play for single player, simplified game desing etc all come from that.

After that maybe it was age of empires 3 that had the biggest negative impact on videogames. Becasue it sucked and was mucho worse than its predecesdor wich was dated at the time. Insted of realizing that the suits tougth that if even the aoe franchise dosent sell then rts is a dead genere. And so they started making less rts.

After that the videogame companies realized that subscription services and gambling like game desing was way more profitable.

they always realized that. before they called it a "microtransaction" they called it "insert another quarter to continue." People forget that kids in the 80s and early 90s had to play video games in public, and that you would basically spend your entire allowance trying to beat one fighting game on medium difficulty with a joystick the size of a gear shift and 5 fat buttons that were the size of your palm. I-was-saying

i remember realizing one day how stupid i was for playing tekken 3 at the mall and that I had spent way more in quarters on tekken 3 over the course of a year or two than I would have if I had just bought the game for PS1

[–] axont@hexbear.net 13 points 2 years ago (1 children)

There was a brief moment between the death of arcades and the birth of WoW where single player style story based games and local multiplayer were the primary product. And I think that colored a lot of expectations for what video games should/could be.

Not to say other times were better or worse. Almost all the video games from the late 70s and early 80s would be considered shovelware now. They were largely cheaply made trash imitating other, more popular games. Many of them programmed, printed and shipped in a matter of weeks. The Arari 2600 even had a cartridge with an early modem that had what we'd call DRM today. You'd pay to download a game, you'd play it three times, and it would delete itself. And hilariously the company that made this thing went on to found America Online.

I think we're at a good moment though with games honestly. Passionate indie creators are making things leaps and bounds ahead of major studios.
