Devil's advocate:

Isn't the vast majority of examples where the male is the vibrant coloured one and the female is plain looking?

Time to dress in drag and do the hula.

Also, unusual hair colors has been in use for thousands of years, with blue hair being the most prominent color used in places like Egypt and the English Isles.
