Right? I've been on disability for a decade. I will take literally whatever anyone offers me. Like, someone tells me "hey, you ever need anything, let me know" to be nice or whatever; well, they're getting hit up, cuz I need shit.

That's literally it. They equate it with sin. The sin of sloth. If they were to understand just how much was being stolen from them every time they go to work, they'd know who to direct their anger at.
Being poor, needing welfare etc. has been characterized as a moral failing, so people think this way.
