Like a lot of words, when they hit popular usage, the meaning tends to morph through misuse.

Nowadays, a meme can encompass pretty much anything that anyone finds funny regardless of medium, format or intent.

The initial word was to analogise ideas to genes. In that meaning the Catholic church is a meme, as are image macros
