I think it would be funnier if one of them was getting close to winning, dies unexpectedly from an aneurysm, and then right as the other is on some stage talking about that happening and what it means for the election they also die unexpectedly from an aneurysm.
Neither party would know what to do, and they would probably try to blame each other for assissinating those old fucks.

really the only shot at it happening is an "october surprise" that involves biden/trump becoming very publicly incapacitated. like, fall down some steps and clonk the coconut on the concrete... never to be seen in public again. or insane ear bleed during a speech. not only that, but the institutional reaction to it would have to be a complete dogfuck. like neither side wants to admit their guy is a turnip hooked up to a bellows, but everybody knows it and their official/unofficial seconds go off script and shit the bed at seizing the moment such that there is no underlying sense of legitimacy to either party since the turnips are still at the top of the ballot, and their unlikable seconds are undermining their own tickets.
in this kind of context, with some imperial crisis looming and driving up gas prices, i could imagine a third party with a simple message and a known quantity for a face doing something.
I would pay an embarrassing amount of money for any audio technicians at the presidential debates to "forgot" to turn off hot mics for both the red-lawn-sign fascist and the blue-lawn-sign fascist. Nothing adventurous, nothing that might harm the physical or mental health of anyone on stage. Simply let them be themselves.

Stein. I know people here are big on PSL but they don't have ballot access like the Greens do, and Stein is already a massive thorn in the DNC's side. I still have my 2016 sign, and since we're all playing reruns might as well.
You would need an economic downturn, a broad loss of faith in political institutions, a sitting president very unpopular with their own party, and an opposition party with lackluster options of whom no one really stood out, and a popular figure with a lot of name recognition either from the business world or defecting from a major party to pick up the support. It would have to be a mix of what happened in 1920, 1968, 1992, and 2016.

I’ve already conceptualized a scenario where Trump gets arrested, lowering his margins just enough for Biden to get 270 EVs, only for two faithless electors to switch to Trump. Trump dies sometime afterwards, leaving ‘Swamy up to be the US Liz Truss.
