Place your bets on how many days they last until they literally jerk it till they rip there own dick off (you know it's a dude that agreed to get this).

More likely, he's probably lying.

The company says its initial goal is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.

Don't they already have this with eye tracking for people with disabilities that prevent them from using a mouse or trackball?

Yes. It's also been done, like 15 years ago, with invasive brain probes and IIRC with less invasive outside-of-the-skull electronics as well. Just like all the "experiments" neuralink was doing on monkeys was just stuff that had already been done 15 years ago.

So far neuralink's entire thing has been trying and mostly failing to do stuff that actual researchers did a long time ago, with tech that's far behind its competitors. The only question is whether they're grifting Elon, or if he's in on the grift and they've got other marks.

Probably a little bit of both. Elon is definitely trying to grift more federal money (like with SpaceX) to prop up his other vanity bullshit.

tbf, being able to just think the words is easier than any physical accessibility method.

otoh, I doubt that's what Musk's implant is doing.

going from moving fast and breaking things to moving fast and killing humans

Moving fast and killing humans indirectly to moving fast and killing humans directly

Capitalists are the most gullible shitheads.

You can't tell me anyone other than tech bros are dumb enough to believe these claims.

Do rich people just not get that normal people find this kind of shit dystopian and creepy?

[–] zifnab25@hexbear.net 12 points 2 years ago

Normal people aren't the real audience. This is just rich asshole-to-rich asshole communication, entirely off in a walled garden somewhere that's been relabeled "Galt's Gulch" as a joke.

[–] somename@hexbear.net 22 points 2 years ago

Oh god. This is so bad. I hope they're lying about the implantation.

Imagine letting the guy that made Cars But Worse, Subway But Worse, Twitter But Worse, etc put anything in your head. Everything this guy touches turns to shit, every success he’s sever had has been bc he has the money to hire actually competent people who manage to circumvent his dumbass meddling just enough to pull a little something off

a-guy

Capitalism has gotten to a point where we will be the ones getting enshittified, that is, unless you count car-depency, lead poisoning, and microplastics to be doing that already.

Our all-knowing great men everyone: they poisoned you for profit, and thanks to "muh property rights" everyone thinks they're in the right to do so.

I feel bad for that mutilated victim if true

Knowing how these con-artists operate, I suspect this chip doesn't do anything meaningful and the goal is to make "We put some metal in this guy's brain" headlines without explaining any actual benefit to the augmentation. Maybe he'll solve a rubix cube on camera or rattle off a bunch of prime numbers he memorized, and pretend the chip is doing the leg work. But this is almost certainly a cosmetic that's intended to market the idea of safe industrial scale brain surgery.

Capturing neuron spikes with an implant is literally something undergrad student clubs do. Musk still hasn't been specific about how his implants are any better than existing implants. Also my money is on his somehow being worse and just swiss cheesing the brain of whoever got the implant.

Pretty confident with a little know how and the right tech, plenty of geeks could make a speaker go "boop" from some minor voltage fluctuations.

[–] Dr_Gabriel_Aby@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago

I really hope the guy explodes like Musk cars and rockets.

If I were one of the researchers who had been doing this (and significantly more) successfully and humanely for decades, I'd be so fucking pissed off at the publicity this is getting. Literally none of this is new, except the cruelty and lack of care.

sometimes i still think about those monkeys that they tortured and it still fucks me up. death to everyone that allowed it to get to human experimentation.
