please educate me what "brick" means here

[–] frogloom@hexbear.net 89 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (4 children)

brick is also used as an insult in drag, i.e. “she looks like a total brick. her makeup and outfit are obviously terrible.”

but they meant it as in brick like in basketball as to miss a shot, i.e “you totally bricked that shot, you scrub”

[–] MorelaakIsBack@hexbear.net 74 points 2 years ago (1 children)

to further explain: it specifically hails from street ball courts, often wedged between urban apartment buildings, which were often brick buildings. "bricking" is shooting a shot so wild as to miss the backboard completely and hit the brick building behind the court.

[–] culpritus@hexbear.net 19 points 2 years ago

I always thought it was because the shot was thrown like a brick, meaning with a poor arc to the basket. The ball can't make it through the hoop easily without a high arc on the shot.

Can people stop making up new words! My decrepit 30 something ass can't handle it anymore!

[–] casskaydee@hexbear.net 50 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Both of these usages of "brick" are more than 30 years old...

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 25 points 2 years ago

I was going to say being 30 years old puts you about as squarely as you could be in the target demo for yelling "brick" at a bad basketball shot

I’m way older than that and didn’t know either one. Is antisportsball male a gender?

[–] HexBroke@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Basketball was never strongly male coded in my youth in my country so you're welcome here

You will have to become this man, however

Sinny rizz, cousin. If you don’t have the sauce to fly don’t buy your ticket on TripAdvisor, my gangster disciple.

And it will happen to you!

[–] Cummunism@hexbear.net 27 points 2 years ago (1 children)

HexBear, always teaching me stuff i definitely did not know. I thought it was a joke about mansplaining.

[–] gramathy@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

That’s what I thought too lol

Like, toxic masculinity resulting in gender affirmation

[–] LemonGrease@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I just learned I am a brick darn

it's okay, as long as you keep showing up to the court and keep practicing your free throws, you'll see improvement.

a brick is a trans woman who doesn't pass*, but he meant it in the basketball sense as in "you fucked up that shot"

*primarily used by self hating trans women in ny experience, so it makes sense that he wouldn't know it

Changing my name to Attila the Brick for the next 18 months

[–] TGhost@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 years ago

Now days it's being used as an insult to TERF women. They say they have trouble passing, many such cases.

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 49 points 2 years ago

I don't know either the basketball or the traphobic term 😭. Too much of a himbo to have any xontext for this

[–] Sinistar@hexbear.net 32 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

"I'm not homophobic, I'm just a hater" energy.

[–] 420blazeit69@hexbear.net 27 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Gender-affirming mansplaining?

[–] Cromalin@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

a brick is a trans woman who doesn't pass*, so he was apologizing and explaining that that wasn't what he meant. idk if that's mansplaining?

*primarily used by self hating trans women in ny experience, so it makes sense that he wouldn't know it

[–] Cummunism@hexbear.net 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

all i had to do was scroll a little bit further to see that someone thought the same thing I did.
