It stood out to me how in some anime/manga, that characters of Chinese origin are referred to not by standard on'yomi but by a loan reading from modern Chinese. Cardcaptor Sakura stands out: Ri Shaoran from Li Xiaolang, rather than the on'yomi Ri Shourou.

Looks like it is surprisingly similar to changes of Russian and Ukrainian names between languages where Russian uses Vladimir or Alexandr and Ukrainian uses Volodymyr and Olexandr.
