I hate what the zeitgeist has turned 1984 into. It's barely about surveillance. It's mostly about how a powerful government controls people. They control media, and they always make sure to point you at some enemy they're at war with, even if it's made up. They force people to turn on each other to gain something small for themselves instead of working together to improve their condition. Etc. The surveillance state is a very small part of that.
So 1984 is about British colonisation?
