I just want to say: Comrade, thank you. Thanks comrade, this is very nice and very good, thanks a bunch, have a nice day ✌♥ comrades!

This is only the start of the project. Which means these researchers will be back to do some kind of content analysis. I don't remember giving any kind of consent to be a research subject like this, do you? I wonder what his ethics statement said and whether an ethics committee actually cleared it.

Regardless, I propose that we throw off the results for when they come back. If we all sign off every post with random words, like, golfcart orange gallbladder, they will appear in the list as the most frequently used words by 'tankies'. That'll teach 'em.

this bit was the cherry on top

Omg it's too much I'm dying. Thanks, comrade. Thank you very much. Double-nice good find.

Did the article in question make it peer review? If so, wow, standards are lower than I expected for those who support the empire.

Even down to basic logic. If a 'tankie' community forms by 'siphoning' users from other 'far left' online communities, can one really conclude that the number of 'tankies' has grown? Surely that's only evidence that Marxists move around (let's not mention that one reason is they keep getting booted from mainstream platforms, while extreme right wingers get algorithm'd to the top of everyone's feed).

The number of 'left extremists' didn't go back to zero e.g. when Chapo Trap House got quarantined. They just couldn't congregate on they sub anymore. So they didn't magically grow again when Hexbear or GenZedong were created. They just moved. It seems obvious that numbers have grown. But that's not directly supported by the argument.

Can't wait for the next project where they follow up with their suggestion and compare left wing 'extremists' with right wing extremists:

"Left wing extremists don't commit terrorism and are frequently found arranging protests on behalf of the most vulnerable people. They hold outrageous views such as the right to basic health and safety precautions at work and the right to access a doctor when ill. If they are involved in violence it is as subject to the violence of the state or of right wing extremists. Nonetheless we conclude that these people are dangerous. Because they make our brains feel mushy with cognitive dissonance by pointing out that the good guys^TM^ get up to some downright bad guy behaviour."

Edit: I'm obsessed. It gets worse:

We're not learning if something is racist or not – we're learning which is more racist. Who knows what we'll find … [?]

Jfc. Only someone who never has to worry about being subject to racism could say something like this with such hubris. What a redacted. At least they're honest that with liberals—the majority of most online spaces—it's only a question of degree.

If anyone wants an example of how technology, including AI, is designed to be intentionally racist, this is it. The results of this project could be a machine learning moderation algorithm that doesn't try to prevent racist speech but only to moderate the more racist of any two utterances. A deliberate intention to build into AI the exact kind of techno-structural racism enacted by liberal humans up to now. Liberals just can't help themselves, can they?

Haha yeah the whole "paper" is just amazing, this was an exceptional grift by the "researchers".

[–] 133arc585@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Indeed. Seems they got paid nearly a half a million $USD of federal taxpayer money.

[–] redtea@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 2 years ago

Yeah, but what would you prefer, this or libraries?

[–] 133arc585@lemmy.ml 16 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Did the article in question make it peer review?

No, it was submitted to ArXiv which doesn't require or perform peer review.

[–] redtea@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That gives me some hope. But it's kind balanced out by the paper's call for more 'intellectual diversity' because the research uncovering extremism online tends to focus on the right wing and to be conducted by left-leaning academics. It couldn't be because overwhelmingly there is only right wing extremism and they're not going to dox themselves. Couldn't be that.

(We won't mention this guy, Matthew Goodwin, and his ilk, either, eh?)

[–] rjs001@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Even peer reviewed ones often have shockingly low standards. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogdanov_affair)

[–] redtea@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 2 years ago

😯 I'd not heard of this one. I suppose this is what you should expect if you have over your entire intellectual apparatus to the yanks to keep the communists out.

Not dissimilar to the Sokal Affair, which eventually led to the book, [Fashionable Nonsense] (https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashionable_Nonsense). I'm not convinced that Sokal and Bricmont found what they claimed to find but they did reveal some flaws in the academic research process.

Holy shit, they seriously use word "tankie" in a fucking research paper?

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 32 points 2 years ago

amazing right

pretty funny way to scam the NSF out of half a mil

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 25 points 2 years ago
[–] 133arc585@lemmy.ml 14 points 2 years ago

It's upsetting. I've worked on projects that have received NSF funding before, and if the final result was this? I'd never be able to secure funding again.

SAO Online nerd is now "scholar"

Oh I've seen that on Hexbear, it's fucking hilarious I love it.
